I found a local source for "FRESH WATER electric blue lobsters". What is the deal with these suckers? Anyone growing them? Are they like redclaw or yabbies? Can you eat em? They are a pretty good price- 10 bucks each.

There are a few things it could be... a redclaw, yabbi or a north american cray... P.Alleni. All three are sold through aquarium fish stores as pets and all three are commonly called blue lobsters, or electric blue lobsters. The electric in the name would imply to me that it's a P. Alleni. They don't get nearly as large as either of the australian crays.

If you can get a pic, I can id it for you for sure.


Oh, and you can NOT keep north american crays and australian crays together. ALL North American crays are potential carriers of 'the crayfish plague'. Just a word of caution.

IF you want to raise North American Crays for food, then I would suggest... Red Swamp (Procambarus Clarkii) or the Signal Crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus). Being on the west coast, Signal crays may be easier to find. Both will breed well and are worth eating.

The crayfishy dudes are 10$ Each. call 360-440-4000. I read this in The Little Nickel. I don't know about shipping, age, or anything else. The sellers aren't me. These crestaceans are kept as pets. Tell me anything you know. Aren't you the guy with the hotspring? Not sure about shipping. I don't need to ship myself- they are about 30 minutes from my house.

Wikipedia (http://www.theaquariumwiki.com/Blue_Crayfish) says that blue crayfish need 100 liters (26 gallons) each and to stock only 1 per tank. I might still call the blue crayfish breeders later. Thanks for the info!

wild stock is a great way to go. Once they've been in your system for a while and have been flushed of anything they had in the wild, they'll be great.

North American crayfish are definitely smaller than the commonly farmed Aussie crays. Signals and Red Swamp are some of the larger crays found in North America.

Cooking them, you can treat them more like shrimp, or go for a spicy crayfish boil. now that's good eats!
