I believe Golden Ponds in Baldivis, are selling them. pPlease please, please check your water tank temperature first. So far it has been too hot for many systems around here as the other day Perth recorded it's hottest April day in 100 years, our autumn seems a little later this year.

I was hoping to have a go at trout this winter, but with my limited experience of Barra this summer & not quite getting to size yet I am weary of having the same experience with trout (ie late summer this season, early summer next season- effectively unseasonal weather eating into both ends of the growth period). Currently got water temps around 21 degrees most days.

I am waiting on Troutman's first run. Assuming he decides it is cool enough to deliver in the next few weeks, will we get enough time for a reasonable result??? The other option is going for silvers which seem to be available right now. Not ideal going into winter....

On a positive note, the warm weather has meant more Barra growing & they're really chomping through the pellets now at around 25-28cm. Would I be better off even just heating the tank for a few months to get them up to 'plate' size? My concern would be the lack of availability of fish mid winter.

Your suggestions would be appreciated.

Last season I got trout to over 1.6 kg from the week after easter to Christmas. Many of the trout were over a kg in October. Trout grow fast and are a great feed from 300gm on and you should have no trouble getting them to that size and larger over what is left of Autumn, winter and spring.

I expect to start harvesting my trout from late winter. Last year i was pulling trout out that weighed 750gm in the last week of August and 600gms in early August. (The first one I pulled (Euthanased) in late May was 250gms) All were a great feed. I did start with advanced fingerlings but even if you halved these weights you will still have a good feed at the end of August and an even better feed into spring.

Mark, what size are 'advanced fingerlings' & where would you source them??

This is starting to give me hope (rubbing hands gleefully).

Eat your Barra at the end of month.... get some trout, they'll be 500gm by end of November... then get your next lot of Barra a bit earlier than last time...
