These guys have been in the feeder fish tank at one of the dingier LFS's for over a week. Every time I've asked an employee about them I've got a different answer. Sometimes they cost up to $50 (apparently a rare species of oscar) $3 (a female paradise fish) and today 75c (an adult version of the feeders, which were rosy barbs) So I got two, since I really wanna know what on earth they are. They look to me a bit like some sort of cichlid...

Oops forgot to add these guys ahve been living in coldwater for about a week so much ahve a pretty high tolerance rate or be coldwater fish

I'm strating to side towards it being an aussie native or a cichlid. thought you guys might have an idea...

yeah i just checked mine out and they look the same as an sp...the line on the side that follows the back is the same

Yah have been looking around and the silver or golden perch seems close. These guys are 2.5 cm and 4 cm long, the size of large tetras. I still cant work out how on earth they ended up with a load of rosy barbs tho

So how big do silver perch get? anything interesting about them? The main reason I got these guys was because they were a dollar fifty, but from what I've read their carnivores so don't really wanna try em with my goldfish LOL

Hey, what are the catfishy things in the background? Lol they were also at the same store, labeled bumblebee catfish, but then again their discus were apparently angels.

sounds like a very educated fish shop :shock:

Silvers are omnivores and will get as big as you let them :D Most of us growing them will let them get to at least 500g then eat them :twisted:

75c for a little silver is a very good price :)

and they are very placid, had 30 of them with two goldfish. no probs.

LOl it's not my usual LFS, but me and mum discovered a while ago what we've nicknamed the bargain bin. These guys have absolutely NO idea, and now and then the guy who cleans the tanks will rearrange the fish stockings. The employees never notice and just charge you for whatever it says on the label of the fish tank. We've seen $5 discus, $100 guppies, all sorts of different fish being charged as feeder fish, some very expensive. And snails can cost anywhere between $2-50 depending on what tank they happen to be in.

Do these guys eat Java Moss? As my quarantine tank is kinda full of java moss, and I've already sacrificed enough of it to my crazy yabbies LOL.

Hmm if they get on with goldies,when they get bigger (as in cant be eaten by goldfish) I'll pop em outside with them.

no on the java moss from my experience, although they love duckweed.

funny, i was just going to suggest you feed the java to your yabbies, but you've already figured that one out.

they can probably go as low as 10C and as high as 30C, but best temp to keep them is between 18C and about 25C

Lol I had a 40g tub worth of Java, I'm now down to 20g worth, somehow I think the yabbies might be feeling a bit full LOL. I'm gonna let it grow out again and give it to them again since they loved it for so much, but for now the fishies can play in it
