Has anybody had any luck keeping Mullet in there Aquaponics system?

I'm curious about there growth rates. How long they take to get to plate size etc

I've had 30 odd in my fishpond for 3 weeks and are doing fine. They average around 80mm in size. There eating algae from the logs, lilies and pots. I've seen them take guinea pig pellets once there saturated and falling apart in the water. I grow my duckweed on the pond so I would think they'd also eat that.

They school together and swim around the pond constantly and aren't afraid of the open areas unlike the Perch and Bream.

Being an oily fish they should be great smoked.

Cheers Muzza

Very interesting Muzza, I have tried in the past to keep small poddy mullet, caught in fresh water in aquaiums. They never seemed to last long so I gave up.

There is a guy in Melbourne that is going to trial a few estuary fish in fresh water and see how they go. He reckons they will just need a good dose of salt every few months to stop them blowing up. I will see if I can get him to post on here

Geoff... in Albion Park... kept some mullet, and bream alive for quite a while... but they were both really slow growing.. and not worth the effort...

Some of us don't care if the fish are slow growing Rupe. I have 50 new tandanus coming next week and they look like at least a 3 year growout from what I am seeing from the ones I got two years ago.

Interesting Muz, I quite like the taste of mullet but it must be fresh. Ive got a bream hole that I fish in esperance and we often catch a few mullet. Might see if I can bring some home next time.

Fair enough... although I have a client that's eating Tandanus after 18months - 2 years...

But they don't live down near the Antarctic....

And, as Geoff... and others have found... most live caught fish... are difficult to get on a pellet... and need to be hand/live fed...

Mine would be a lot bigger if they weren't in a community tank with 3 year old silvers

These guys came from slightly brackish water and were weaned off salt over a couple of days.

I put them in one of my grow bed's that I'm setting up for a floating raft and over two days i kept adding salt. 10kg in total was added, approximately 2kg at a time of pool salt was chucked in the top end below the supply pipe and left to dissolve. The grow bed gets roughly 1200L/hr going through it so it would dilute pretty quickly. They certainly look healthy enough. I had to move them before I went to work two weeks ago as a Kookaburra starting turning up every morning, so they got put in the pond to increase their chances of survival.

What I've read on the Net they take 3 years to reach 30cm. There more for ornamental purposes but I would like to taste a couple if they survive. I was actually getting shrimp for the trough when I found them so there a bonus.

I guess I'll just suck it and see............Cheers

I think I may have it wrong, but if I had one of those with AP I think my hair would be all frizzy from the water... :D

running estuary fish is definitely on my to do list... if all goes well i'll have flathead and whiting but biggest issue i will have is getting legal stock. I don't know what the regs are in other states but it illegal to take fish for an aquarium etc
