My brother has recently set up a 140L heated aquarium with fish like, angels, catfish, bumble bee's, clouds etc. One of the Clown Loach has white spot. I told him to quarantine the fish and salt and raise the main tank temp. Im not very experienced with tropical aquarium fish so Id like some help. Is it ok to salt these kinds of fish? Is it ok to salt the main tank with all these different types of finless/skin type fish etc? What would be the right port of call here. Thanks

loaches dont like salt Raising temp is good 27 c but as it is a new tank check nh3 and no2 as this can also trigger disease issues and if you add meds you make it worse |

So dont salt but keep temp at 27 deg? Im assuming the higher temp kills off the disease? Does this go for most tropical fish? This whole aquarium thing is new to me. |

tropical respond differently to medications but i think in this circumstance you will find that the environment must be fixed before any treatment can be used white spot itself is usually a soft disease problem and easily treated ,while it is normally caused by a drop in temp, if nh3 or no2 are the cause such as in a new tank ( biological filter not strong enoughor 'new tank syndrom') the additon of medication actually assists in killing the fish(always test before medicating) many trop fish are more sensitive than ap fish cheers Byron Also if new to the hobby make sure it is whitespot google some pics to be sure he's on the right track |

I am assuming it is ich; http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/ich.php However this is a tropical tank so you can (even though it says maybe not medicate) If he has just thrown a bunch of fish in a tank without understanding their natural environment he may need to read up a bit. As fishman said check ammonia, nitrites etc and make sure the water is spanky, it is easier to keep fish in AP than a tropical tank (and especially if it has to look pretty).

Have salted my aquarium but not high so less than 1ppt. The garden shop around the corner from me does this and they have the healthiest fish in town. Donno about loaches not liking salt Lots of plants in the aquarium will help keeping the system healthy And get some seachem flourish excel as it will keep the tank from growing bad algae My 2c |

It sounds like Ich Charlie. I have 4 loaches and they have been salted to 4ppt for many weeks without a problem to get rid of it. I maintained my tank at 25degC for the whole time. I cant use meds due to the fact that i run it as AP, although this is how any good filter works anyway. They just dont have plants in it... I treat my tropical tank exactly the same as my AP. I am no expert, although i have not had any deaths due to disease. Apply common sense just the same as your AP. |

Also once I took the angels and kribensis out of the tank the clown loaches and bristle nose cats are coming out big time. Cichlids are aggressive fish and not good in a community tank imho http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cichlid |

Thanks guys. Ive been teaching my bro in the ways of cycling and the importance of keeping things in check with a new system. But I do feel out of my depth with trop fish. I appreciate your feedback and will relay the info and see if we can get it sorted.
