Just been checking out the overhauled Recreational Fishing guidelines and on page 25 they mention tilapia.

Recreational fishing guide 2013

Does that mean that at one stage, or maybe even now, that they are available here in WA?

If so I would guess that was/is purely for the aquarium trade and not for aquaculture reasons?

Tilapia were legal until recently... although WA was the only state where they were...

They are now on the noxious species list... and illegal...

They obviously made it into our local waterways to be included in this guide, no doubt by people deliberately releasing.
From all things I have read on this forum they seem to be prolific breeders and could have a major impact on local fish stocks.

I would imagine this is why they are no longer available. Might be too late though.

No, no, no....

Quote:
Under the Fish Resources Management Act 1994 you must not do the following with any noxious fish:

keep, breed, hatch or culture them;
have them in your possession;
consign or convey them;
release them into any waters; or
put them into a container or receptacle in which they might remain alive

So what would you do if you were minding your own business wetting a line in a boat and you caught one? you cant keep it, but you can not release them back into the water.

In QLD I think you have to bury it x meters from the bank or burn it or something ridiculous ...
Can't even eat them, legally

I seem to recall reading that they are in some waterways near canarvon.

Although you would be foolish to try and catch them from AP IMHO.

Indeed... in QLD there's a $150,000 fine if caught in possession of them...

They're supposed to be buried.. so that carrion birds can't pick them up... and fly over waterways... dropping any mouth fry into them... or something like that...

you wouldn't want them to be dropped back into the same or neighbouring creeks, from where it just came from... :dontknow:

The above mentioned guide says- 'No bag limit. Do not return to water. Dispatch humanely' I have not read the whole guide so don't know if it mentions anything else.

What is the definition of dispatch humanely?
