One thing I am finding out is that if you plan on eating your fish and are not a fan of that "fishy" taste, then you must improve your solid's removal design and increase the amount you filter your water in the growbeds. The more the fish consumer their own waste, the smellier and more fishy tasting they get......

oops, this needs to be taken out of "Members Systems" sub Forum

sorry...

Edit: done MF :)

Michael.... was some recent discussion about "off flavoured" or "muddy" tasting fish in another thread....

You can purge them for a couple of days... either by not feeding them....
or isolate into a salted tank... commercial operations do it this way.

Or you could increase you growbed capacity or plant uptake to remove more solids from the system.

Perhaps this could be your problem and solution.

There are occasions when seperate bio-filters are of benefit for solids removal...

i.e before running to nft/hydro type channels/systems, however using a gravel bed works the same way for the same result and uses the solids productively to grow veges, whereas a bio-filter requires periodic removal, cleaning and disposal of the accumulated solids... often dumped and wasted.

I definately could use to increase my uptake and growbed capacity if I had the space. There might be a new greenhouse in my future;)

Michael, just been back over your thread, first few pages anyway....

Are you still only running 300 gal (total) growbed capacity to your 1000 gal tank capacity???

Still feeding to your growbeds by a standpipe venturi system in your tank?

Is perhaps not sufficient to deal with the extra solids produced by growing fish?

I'm keeping stocking densities relatively light, but yes I do not have enough growbed space is really what it comes down to. I know it is a problem and has been from the beginning. I need an auxilliary greenhouse/grow chamber to expand into. We'll see if the wife gives up her outdoor gardening area. I've been eyeing it for two years!!!! And every time I stare off into it she tells me "Don't even think about it."

Damn fine pic! I got goosebumps seeing it all over again so I set it to my desktop as background....for now. Doohan went too soon! I think he had the talent to have shattered Agostinis record/s in the end. Once Rainey was out, Doohan had no competition.
