Post subject:  Big white sports on Tilapia

Hi Everyone,

Since five days two fishes die daily. I found big white spot on their side and looks that the skin is coming out. The fish looks very week and swims slowly. Any ideas what is causing this, and do I need to do?

Thanks

how big is your fish tank? what have the temp's been? have you tested for ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates? if so, what are those readings?
how big is your growbed? is there media in it?
do you have aeration? filtration?
with so little info, it's kind of hard to tell.. but i'd probably salt to 3ppt

Thank you for responding.
1 - I have two tanks. One 1000 litters with about 80 fishes. Second tank 700 litters and has about 40 fishes. The 700 litter tank is where I am facing the problem. The 1000 is less of problomatic as I get less deaths but the same whit spot are appearing on those fishes who die.
2 - I live in Saudi Arabia, and in these days temp reaches about 45C. But all the system is in an air conditioned green house. Water temp does not exceed 34C.
3. Getting those readings are almost not possible for me here. Most US/AUS sites do not ship testing kits to Saudi Arabia. And if they do it will very expensive. I managed to find a pH tester. It reads from 6.5 to 7.
4. I have three grow beds. Each is 30cm high. All thanks including the fish tanks are IBC tanks.
5. I think Aeration is fine. I have about five aeration pipes in each tank. And can see water bubbling in each tank with big bubbles appearing on the top of each tank.
6. I do not have any additional filtration.

I attached a photo of the sick fish.

Thanks

salting to 3ppt might help, and would not hurt.. a few plants might not like it, but most would be ok

Think you'll need to go to 6ppt.... and it might well be too late....

One of the primary causes... is you're probably overstocked.... and/or underfiltered...
even for Tilapia...

A secondary cause is very probably oxygenation... especially at your temperatures...

With regards to test kits.... I'm sure that BYAP would ship to you... just go to the store and put an order in...

That is six parts per thousand. So for 1000 liters of water you would add 6 kilograms of salt. Solar salt works well, so does aquarium salt.

I used to use 10 ppt for an hour for this symptom but fish not stop dying.
About a month when the fish stop dying the left fish are less than half.
