In my new system I am planning on having my 2KL FT inside my shed. i figure this will help counteract issues with algae, evaporation, temp fluctuations etc, but am wondering if having the fish in darkness for extended periods of time will have any effect? Has anyone ever come across issues with keeping fish indoors? |

I grew Barra for 2 years inside my shed. No algae problems either. |

I know it's possible to grow fish without direct sunlight, I have a large Murray cod out the back of my shop that is 7 or 8yo and has never seen direct sunlight since it was a fingerling... but I believe they definitely benefit from some direct sunlight. A couple of summers ago I shared a batch of Barra fingerlings with one of my customers, 10 went into my indoor AP display system that never got direct sunlight (HID light over the GB), and 25 went into his outdoor AP system in his backyard. Those put into his system grew at a much faster rate than those in my indoor system, and we were using the same pellets. His may have benefited from some insects etc, if any, that fell into his FT, but I don't think there would've been enough insects etc to attribute such a difference in growth to that alone, especially across all 25 of his fish... IMO it was the sunlight... but just a theory, I have no proof! |

I wonder if it was the layer of algae that grew in the sunlight. I have an outside tank that has a shade cloth tent over it to keep leaves and stuff out.there is a fine layer of algae on the walls of the tank. That may be the extra food the fish are getting. I have had these 25 silvers under shade cloth for a few years now and they are thriving, I estimate there are some at 5kg from 3 years ago and some at 500gm to 1000 gm from last year John |
