Are Yabbies good escape artists?

Post subject:  Are Yabbies good escape artists?
I am hoping to be able to grow some yabbies next spring when I can catch some and I am trying to decide what to keep them in so I can redesign my system a bit.

How good are they at escaping? Do they stay put unless the water quality goes down or do they try and get out all the time? From what I have been reading around here marron are really good at getting out, but there isn't much on yabbies.

Would a bathtub be OK given it has a sloping end? Would something with straighter sides be better (like a plastic tub)? I am assuming they need to be in a separate tank to any fish if they are to breed or the young will get eaten.

Damn good - I had 2 in my outdoor system which even got past a cover I had on the system - then I had one in a classroom tank, and it somehow got out and landed up drying out over the weekend :(

Bathtuba are what I had, and it was easy for them to escape - my IBC's are proving escape proof SO FAR!... I now have 3 redclaw in one and so far they have not got out... deeper water would make them feel safer, especially if you provide adequate shelter and hidy holes for them :)

AS AM said.............Damn good!

i lost lots due to escape........ they tend to prefer their water with a tad higher PH around 8ish, but are OK at 7.5 and maybe a tad lower.

I would have thought a bath tub would have been ok AM, did you have an air line running in there?

they'll scale an air line in 30secnds!

the one monster i have in the indoor tank has not climbed up in ages, water must be nice ;) Actually, i haven't seen him in a few days, now you've made me paranoid! Sometimes he does have abig feed and dissapear for a few days...........going to check!

no air lines in the old bath tub system, the overflow from tub to tub was plenty enough to up the DO... but I did have the pipes from my pump running out fo their tub...
I watch my biggest redclaw climb the outside of the pvc pipe I have running up the centre of my IBC (my airlift tube) - it is smooth, but he managed to get to the top... then had no-where to go so he dropped back down eventually... after I popped a cement building block in he seemed happier as he moved right in and has claimed it for himself.

Thanks, sounds like a couple of blue drums cut in half should prove hard to get out of. Just need to keep pipes away from the sides.
