Just wondering if there are many of you who are keeping your trout all year round and are going that extra step to breed. I seem to be able to keep the water temp down low enough so far over the summer. I have 9 large ones which I thought I would experiment with and was wondering how easy it is and exactly what I should be doing. If all goes well I will expand on the aquaculture side of it, setting up more tanks and filters.

I would recommend you invest money on a RAS aquaculture course... and a hatchery course...

Then invest money in setting up all the necessary equipment, including scientific instruments...

Then have a crack at it if you want...

You have to milk the milt from the boys, harvest the eggs from the girls, put em together with fancy gear and boom! you get to hope

Trout have not been known to breed in captivity afaik.

I wonder why fishing mad foke don't do a little breeding and release. Is it against the law to drop 50000 golden perch or cod fingerling's into the local river system. Not that I've been thinking of it.

If you have two fish naturally ready to spawn... you can strip them... but usually they're hormone induced firstly....

It's the incubation of the eggs and lavael developement that's the difficult part...

Still got that filter for 40000 fingerling's and only George lives in the swirl part of it. Is it true that they get the hormone from pregnant womens. Pee.? Was told this from a guy that had looked into breeding fish but never got around to it. The next question is if they added this the natural way to a fish tank. dose it have a similar effect. Sorry couldn't get the smilie to sit the other way.

Troutman reckons they are easy enough to breed, its keeping the eggs viable, then the fingerlings that make it, alive, that is the problem.

Yes and no.... the hormone is "Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG)" ...

Its generated by the placenta after fertilisation... Once the fertilized egg implants, the developing placenta begins releasing hCG into a womens blood... and some into urine...

So it's often used as a test for pregnancy.... or birth defects...



It can also be used as a test for tumour growth...



Hormone injection of fish acts directly on the pituitary glands ... stimulating oocyte (egg) maturation and ovulation within 48 hours ....

Fish spawn naturally based on certain climatic and environmental factors... usually water temperature, rise in water level (spring rain/flood), day length, light sensitivity etc... and if conditions aren't right will actually re-absorb their eggs....

Such natural conditions are difficult, but not impossible to reproduce in tanks... but conditions can certainly prepare the fish to an optimum point where hCG injection will force a spawn rapidly...

Both female and male fish are injected with the hormone...

It's not that hard to get fertilised eggs from a spawning... but knowing when the eggs are most viable... and then ensuring successful developement to larvael stage... followed by stocking to pond/tank and movement on to eating natural foods, followed by starter dust...

To fingerling stage... that's the tricky part...
