Is there anyone out there that has grown mosquito fish for perch food?

We have mosquito fish in an outdoor pond and they breed like rabbits and you can't kill them no matter how bad the water gets (within reason).

Plus if the perch have their fill and there is left over mosquito fish, they would just swim around until they got eaten - no chance of polluting the water.

I am looking for cheap food and I have gone off the maggot idea as I put too much in my aquarium that hosted 5 perch until my system was finished and they all died in less than 24 hours through putrification. :cry:

Might be do-able in the southern states.

Doesn't QLD have a law where that hang draw quarter feather and skin (not nessecarily in that order) people that breed mozzies? :shock:

has been talked about before, possibly in alternative fish foods thread

Steve she said mosquito fish, not mosquitos.
mp- there are several who have raised guppies, swordtails, etc as feeder food for carnivorous fish. Don't see a problem. Also, see the thread on raising maggots and mozzies. That way you can have your own eco-system going - fish eat mozzies, perch eat Mosquito fish.

Guppies breed just as well, and they arent considiered a pest and illegal to keep here in SA

Mossie FISH i think are declared noxious, see above penalty for mozzie insects ;)

The rivers and creeks around my place are already full of gambusia - and who would know if you were breeding them in your bond anyway. The fish shops up here also sell them as feeder fish - or at least they used to.

The local fish shops won't sell them anymore around here,even as feeders, there is a heap of them though in local dams and i catch them there when the need arises

I knew of the damage the little critters do in the environment but I didn't know that you needed a permit to have them at home.

For the record, they got in my pond as my neice released a couple in there that she had as pets (I realised this when they bred up in the pond). I do not feed them, I guess they just eat the weeds and mosquitos. Fortunately there are no waterways anywhere near my place so there is no chance of them getting back into the natural environment.

I'll harvest them for the perch in attempt to erradicate them I guess, and focus on growing duckweed (that's not noxious is it :lol: )

I don't trust maggots - they carry bad germs! :twisted:

contrart to popular belief, duckweed and azolla are not declared noxious in (VIC anyway) its hard to find in aquariums becasue when DPI/F goes for a visit they tell them that they "don't like" them to carry it..............the fish shop wner is expected to read between the lines..............LOL (This was said to me when i questioned an aquarium owner on why they didn't have it if it wasn't decared)
