Your starting to run out of time for them if you are just thinking about them now... do they would want to be well advanced and as such will cost a lot more..

Remember we are only about 3 months off trout time..

:headbang: I think I'll just keep things ticking over with my 4 SP and rip out my tomatos and capsicums and replace them with leafy veges

Picked up a doz. barra from Golden Pond on Thurs.
Every thing there was looking great and smelt good too. No deads to be seen.
A lot more water moving thru the retail section , big improvement.
Impressed , good job Herman.

I think Golden Ponds may be your only option this year as last time I spoke to Freo TAFE they were not expecting to have any fingerlings available until October which wont give you enough time to get them up to edible size before April.

I'm confused, Troutman. I was under the impression that growing barra from Oct/Nov through to April and then swapping over to rainbows for the winter months was what a lot of APers did, on a regular basis. Is this not the case? Or are you saying that the barra need to be larger than fingerling size in order to grow them on in six months to be a reasonable eating size?

It's not just that the fingerlings need to be both available, and reasonably sized in October... but the tank temperatures have to be at least above 20 degrees.. preferably above 22... just so that they'll feed... and begin to grow....

That's generally correct PLJ - there has been the odd exception reported on this forum, but for the majority of the time it's just not enough time from fingerling size.

I assume it's one of the reasons that Troutman has his apllication in with Fisheries to be able to sell Jade Perch here, as they do grow fast enough in that time frame, which would give us a summer option with similar growth rates to trout.
