This was posted on the other forum... Quote: A Marketing agency has apologised for a South Australian government-funded publicity stunt that backfired after media executives across the country received dead goldfish floating in bowls. http://www.theaustralian.com.au/nationa ... 6215569077 Not the dead goldfish bit - but the response from South Australia's RSPCA... that, at least in SA.... fish aren't animals... |

I've always wondered about that. I've met several vegetarians who say they are ok with eating fish because, in their words, "fish aren't animals." They then throw a royal fit if I point out that, scientifically, they are classified as part of the Animal kindom, but they continue to insist that "I'm a vegetarian, and I eat fish, therefore fish aren't animals." If it was just one or two, I'd brush it off as wishful thinking and ignore it. But, nearly every vegetarian I've met, and a good number of vegans, say the same thing, and that just baffles me. |

Probably just for the purposes of preventing cruelty to animals - so all the fishermen don't get handcuffed and thrown in the slammer. Would make for some interesting shots of the days catch. |

Yes, maybe its a good thing if the RSPCA continue to think this way. Shots of some fishermans kreels would not go down well with many sensitive folks |

Thats comforting. If I had the same losses that I have had and seen here and on other forums with my land livestock I would be charged with animal cruelty and prevented from keeping them. |

I have been given some videos of Bill Mollison's permaculture course. He often says in them there is no such thing as a vegetarian, just liars. |

this whole dead fish thing reminds me of art class in the 5 grade. We where learning what a still life was and I did a table with a vase like the standard still life but added a fishbowl. I was told that it was not still life due to that but then showed the teacher the fish was belly up and dead so it was still life. |

I was surprised recently to see someone at the Royal show here in Perth with a goldfish in a bag. I thought the days of giving goldfish away as prizes was long gone...

Hi all, fish are not animals as defined in South Australia's Animal Welfare legislation. If legislation defines something as XXX that is what it is for the pupose of that legislation even if that is not its generally accepted meaning (that is why it is defined in the first place). In WA our animal welfare legislation does not include fish as an animal and so we are exempt from animal welfare rules. Cheers Marc |
