I remember hearing somewhere that crayfish were raised somewhere eating fish poo. Is that natural/healthy for them? I don't see it mentioned anywhere online as a natural part of a crayfish' diet. After I heard this I was wondering if the fish waste could be broken down in a system by crayfish instead of worms... then more of the nutrients in the system would go to edible critters.

most crayfish are "detrivores" so they eat pretty much anything dead... they assist in breaking down stuff even more.. i imagine they would find edible stuff in the fish poo, but it wouldn't be a very balanced diet i would think
that being said, i feed my crayfish different plant leaves and sinking pellets

I think most people think bottom feeders eat fish poop. Some of them will dig through it to find undigested bits (think corn - enough said?).

Other bottom feeders, especially tiny shrimp, will eat organisms that grow in or around fish poop as well as undigested stuff.

Anyway... best to feed them real food. They'll eat worms, shrimp, sinking pellets to name a few.

This is really is the perfect forum to be on if you like puns and poop =). I read (where?) that crawdads clean the bottoms of lakes like worms do. Worms eat poop, right? Worms also eat decaying plant/animal matter, so that must have been what it was referring to.

At the very least, I would imagine that crawdads have more of a tolerance for being around fish poop, right? I mean they walk all over the stuff in their natural habitat.

Out of curiousity... does anyone know if Australian redclaws would eat live worms?

Thanks!
