9.30pm bro in law calls up and says his outdoor fountain collapsed and the 6 goldfish need a new home pronto. I've put them in my 3 foot quarantine tank for now. It looks like they are going to stay for a while because bro in law is busy doing other renos in their new house and a pond isn't high on the priority list.

I intend to put them into the AP fishtank with 12-15cm silver perch. are they compatible?

also how long should I keep the goldfish quarantined for? I have never kept goldfish before.

they are the big fat slow moving type like this:

They should get along OK... the problem I've found is that the silver perch feed is so much higher in protein.. that the goldfish ultimately bloat and die...

Well the other thing you might want to consider is temperature. I believe the fancy type of goldfish are not as hardy.

should be ok as they were from an unheated outdoor pond

I have had two goldfish in with my SP's for some time now and there doesnt seem to be a problem. The only reason for the two is that I couldn't catch them as I had them in initially to try to cycle my system before the silvers arrived.

Having said that I didn't realise the feed would bloat them like that.

I am setting up a smaller 250 litre system next to my big tank with just goldfish and intend on transfering them into there once I have my support structure for the blue barrel to sit on top. Might have to then put the goldfish on a diet when they move. Mind you with all that extra weight hopefully they will be easier to catch. :D

Any ideas on what feed I can use for the goldfish so that the plants get the full nutrients??

I have been feeding shubukins and comets with trout or barra feed for more than a year now. They have grown by abt 10x but none has died yet. I believe the fancy fan tail and other fancy type goldfish are less hardy to start with and more prone to blotting (spelling?).

I feed my goldfish with SP feed but at least once a week I throw a handfull of peas into a blender and chuck them in instead. Peas are mild laxitive for goldfish so help keep things moving :)

Not had any problems with mine in a year. Need to remove a few actually or find the time to get another growbed.

Works fine. I did cut 2 small bits of 5mm perspex and reduce the feed amount.
Smallest amount it does is 0.21cups.
Up to 4 feeds a day.

Thanks for that..
Think you might need to show the modification you have done..

Kool that is exactly What I'm Looking For.. I might have to get a few..

One for the main tank and another for sump system and a third for the mini system..

Yes I will have 2 systems up and running at the same time.. Plus My Pond..lol

Garlic is a powerful one. Debloats in a glimpse.

I chucked the goldfish in with the SP and it looked like a few were getting their tails nipped by the SP.
will check up on them in the morning

Disaster.
4 of 6 were floating dead/dying this morning. Fins and eyeballs missing on some
I put the surviving 2 back in the small tank but I don't like their chances as they look really beat up also.
