A work colleague needs to be able to kill 100's of fish (tilapia and gambusia) quickly. His current method of doing this is netting them out and individually knifing each fish.

Does anybody have a method that is:
1. environmentally sound
2. not too bloody - the job is done by volunteers who can tend to be a bit squeamish
3. cheap
4. quick - for humane reasons

Some suggestions have been an ice slurry to slow them down, but then they still need individual attention. Or a bucket with rotenone and the fish are "cycled" through to their ends ;)

the carcasses are buried in tree plantings. the fish must be dead first.

Giving them to us to humanly kill in our AP systems.

Or high dose of clove oil then get them while they sleep. Does an electric current while out of it.

Dropping them into a wood chipper after the clove oil knocks them out would be quick. Not sure about the squeamish part. :boggle:

Or benzocaine, if you can't get clove oil... clove oil will anaethetise rather than kill, unless overdosed... benzocaine will probably just kill them... and it might be easier to get....

Still, damn expensive way of dealing with some crap fish that are going to be buried anyway... :dontknow:

Is there a reason to get rid of them. Any APers around the area.

they are pest species, this is work being done by a conservation agency and must be humane and cheap ;) I'm not sure if they'll be allowed to take the vodka out in the field though :drunken:

it would be nice to find some "humane" suggestions on this thread that can also be used for killing fish for consumption
as that is a problem I have not solved yet
