Hey all,

I'm just seeing if anyone would be interested in jade perch in Dec 2011. This will run as a group buy nothing to do with my business at all, However i'm quite happy to facilitate it.

Ausyfish will have Jp's Available in December, They will be transported VIA Air Freight to Melboune Airport Same day, So I think it would be a good idea to make a meeting spot to organise the fish. We should be able to get them bagged into seperate Quantitys and Labeled.

Pricing go's Like this

50-100 - $1.54
100-500 - $1.10
500-1000 - 88c
1000+ 66c

Iv got a Quote on freight for 100 fish to Melb Airport is around $80 But will contact them when i get a few more numbers for a quote on the numbers were looking at.

Well iv kept 30SP and 25JP over this winter :) There doing very well...

Hoping to see what we can get the fingerling to do before it becomes too cold again.

Richard (Mantis) had some luck with them last year and he has a few in his Aquarium also 25 as well i think...

and we didnt even have summer last year in Victoria, I'm thinking its going to be an OK season for them...

Silverperch are just pointless in vic, they grow too slow if you live in northern victoria i'd say you would have more luck with them than say gippsland or anywhere on the South coast of victoria.

Anyhow its an offer there for those who would like to experiment also..

Yes i am.

200L Sump with 250L of tank and 200L Gravel Bio filter, Scrubby Solid Prefilter, 300w aquarium heater on Low Setting keeps tanks at 17-19 c

They are indoor, I have turned the heater off for the last week or so and temps are sitting at 14c Still feeding and active.

Doable for 25 fish in a small tank/system, I suppose... but makes for expensive fish...

And why not just do th same for Silver Perch???

Fair enough Jamey.... but people need to be aware of the need to heat... and capacity required to do so...

And the bottom line is 14-18 degrees are sub-optimal tempertures for Jade Perch...

Yes Rup but unless us Victorians are going to settle for trout 9 months of the year and then have an off season, it leaves us no option. Either heat for SP or Jades over winter or just run trout.

I'd be interested in experimenting with the Jades, Jamey. I reckon 25 for me. I can pick up from Airport no problems.

I hear you Bundy... but you're going to have to commit to heating.. and stocking the Jades all year round...

You're not going to get new season Jade Perch fingerlings purchased in December,, through to eating size by end of April.... and then be able to switch to trout...

There's interest here in NSW for trying Jades this summer... but unless we can get stock @100mm around end of October... and then, again... unless people are prepared to heat past April... it would be borderline even up here...

Just a thought, but what about eels for us cold victorians over summer. I have a mate with a dam full of them and they will pretty well eat anything and thrive in sub-optimum conditions. Easy to catch and maybe easy to care for. What do people think ?

Hmm could be interesting i think someone has had them before....

Wonder what they are like to eat?? Im pretty sure there bony and probably require smokeing....

Wish they would let us keep bloody redfin!!! Perfect eating fish!! Prob need to feed them yabbies and worms rather than pellets though...

I know one person who had Yabbies in one tank, bout 30 reddies in another and it worked well

The redfin (called yellow perch in North America) will feed readily on pellets, but like most other fish, have to be weaned off of live food. It just takes longer if they are older. There are some big yellow perch aquaculture facilities in the US that grow them out pretty quickly on pellets, and there is information available on how to wean them. I have seen some US folks on this forum have the yellow perch too, which I assume works well for them.

Technically speaking, in Victoria, only Victorian natives, brown trout and rainbow trout are allowable species with their permission to stock permits (which AP falls under). Given that, neither redfin nor jade perch is "allowed" :) . Jade perch however is not considered a noxious species, unlike redfin.
