| Post subject: | Trout Fingerlings |
Am feeling a little disheartened after ringing around and being told that there aren't any trout fingerlings available anywhere in WA for at least another few months. I was so excited after seeing the beautiful trout at the BYAP shop a few weeks ago especially after Faye suggested that it could be possible to have trout year round. A supplier in SA is getting back to me but looks as though the freight costs could be as much as the fingerlings. Freight is only to Perth (which is 6 hours away) so I would have to pick them up, transfer them to aerated tanks and drive them down here. I have been told that the only fingerlings available in WA right now are Silver Perch which are about as exciting as washing gravel. Any suggestions? |

I dont think you can legally transport the trout from SA to WA without a permit? Maybe hit up troutman maybe he has some left. |

you could always stock Kio....they are a great poo machine fish, and wait for the Barra season Fingerlings are getting harder and harder to get everywhere, so many business going out of business due to increase in electric bills.

No Trout fingerlings left unfortunately. There was a shortage this year due to the drought and subsequent large fish losses in one of the hatcheries in Pemberton. I dont like your chances of getting any in from the eastern states either as it would need translocation approval from fisheries and I doubt they would give it. Hopetown gets pretty hot in the summer dosent it?? You may be pushing it to do Trout year round anyway. |

No, you can't bring them in legally without approvals. You're over half way through trout season anyway so I'd be looking at other solutions. I like silvers, but each to their own, here in W.A. you can't afford to be too fussy. Grow something else like goldies to get things cycled, and watch your water temps over summer to see if you will be able to keep trout year round, you may get too hot there.. |

Thanks everyone for your help. We have a few hot days here in summer but it's not as hot as Perth. I still think it would be a challenge to keep them cool enough over summer. I've got a few Koi, goldfish and 5 little silver perch in the pond atm. I've had them for about 2 months and they're all very happy. But with the grow beds being almost ready for planting I'm going to need to put a lot more fish in ASAP. The Koi were expensive but you can apparently breed them easily and some people eat them....??? Might have to stock up with some feeder fish now and then try to get hold of some Barra fingerlings when things warm up a little. |

I've got a 250L aquarium that I can heat and use to hold some Barra in now while I wait for warmer weather. Can you get Barra babies now? |

Your Silvers will get more active once it warms up a bit, personally I think they would be the best fish for you given your location. I know that Espereance gets a few 40C plus days each summer and imagine that where you are would be similar. You should be able to get some Barra fry/fingerlings now. |

300g + fish! Wish mine were that size. Going by what you see them in the shops I guess they are worth around $10 each. |
