I've been looking into raising fresh water shrimp but have been unable to find any local or even mail order suppliers. It also seems like they like warm waters so they would be less them ideal for my climate. I'm now starting to think about salt water shrimp. I would think I could get them at some Chinese markets and I've seen them for sale online so getting a hold of them would not be a probem. I've been unable to find any information on their temperature requirements but its probably not as high as fresh water shrimp, right?
I built a little set up with two, 30 gallon barrels so I might try to raise some in that. I think for the grow bed I'll give seaweed a shot and see how that grows.
Since it would be salt water I was thinking of putting in some clams to help filter the water and maybe they would breed.
So anyway, do you think this would work out with the salt water shrimp? Anyone know anything on their temperature requirements, oxygen levels, stocking densities etc?

If salt water shrimp are anything like their freshwater cousins, they require a great deal of space because they are territorial and can also be cannibalistic. Another obstacle would be introducing the plant component, which you have mentioned with the seaweed but I haven't heard of anyone experimenting with that on this forum as of yet. Sounds like a fun experiment though, keep us updated if you decide to go ahead with it. The possibilities are intriguing.

I've seen some reference to people raising saltwater shrimp in freshwater due to their ability to be stocked in higher densities than the freshwater shrimp.
I will probably use netting to make diffrent layers to keep them in smaller groups and hopefully less territorial.
I dont know much about shrimp but I think these are the coldwater types that come from the bottom of the Atlantic. I'm not sure whether they would be able to survive the summer. If I keep them in a covered tank in the shade their water probably wouldn't get much higher than 70 at the highest. They do seem to survive those packed tanks of live shrimp in restaurants so they can't be too hard to raise.
