Bree you can always buy some fisho gloves(the ones with the dots of rubber)about ten bucks and put rubber gloves under the fisho gloves
easy to hang on to a fish and no stinky pinkys...
...maybe for finer detail.

seemingly the best way is to knife them.
Has somebody suggested a shredder? then you can bucket the remains into the holes for the trees...

Well it's:
- quick
- efficient
- penetrates the brain stem (amongst other things)
- prepares well for burying
- means you can be 'detached' from the 'dispatch'
- Councils should have a shredder readily available (though maybe not a tree shredder, a small brush one should do)
- Relatively cheap
- portable

think that's about all the good points... it's my idea so naturally I can't think of any bad points  can anybody else?

Are you human?: Some times I wonder

While on a sail boat trip in the ocean we caught a 54" fish called a MIMI or some such spelling. My brother got out the really cheap bottle of booze and poured a cap full on the gills. Three of us were trying to hold the fish on board the boat while it thrashed us all around while he got the booze. Death was instant. The fish just stopped moving immediately. Very easy if you are doing a lot of small fish just put some in a bucket and dip fish in and out. next. He used a cheap rum I think he said about $0.70 for a fifth of a gallon. Use what is cheap where your living. It is the alcohol that does the trick.

Washing the shredder may not be pleasant, and if not properly done a few days after the culling the smell will probably let most stink about a bad point :pukeleft:

What, waste rum on fish.....

Unfortunately I think alcohol is just too damn expensive here in Australia with all the duties on it.. Though I might give it a go at some stage with just a capfull to see how it goes.

Reading this post got me wodering/thinking if it makes me a bad person for thinking that there is nothing wrong with just collecting all the fish in a container and just dumping them somwhere without having to kill them with alcohol, clove oil, electricity etc.. and let them die without water(just dont think too much about it).
I grew up in a house where we had livestock and harvesting them ourself was part of everyday life..some of which I did myself since when I was 13-14. Maybe I have lost my humanity in the process?
If they were larger fish, I would have suggested snapping the neck as its very quick and easy. But with 3cm fish I'd just chuck them on the ground, catch another one and not worry about the one dying out of breath..

Sounds like the perfect justification for setting up the still you were talking about last year

Bury them with one end of a hose, then connect the other end of the hose to a bottle with a hand lotion pump on it. Label the bottle with the words ..

WARNING - DO NOT USE MORE THAN ONE PUMP PER FISH!!! Contains HFD (Humane Fish Dispatatiate) do not not take intravenously - wash feet after use) Remove hose from fish placement immediately after instantly dispatching fish.)))

Or just go with the ice slurry. It makes them sleepy, then kills them, and is the recommended way to dispatch fish as per our all knowing and all caring government. (actually I think fisheries do a pretty good job, I have a feeling, that soon, the bottom of Australia is going to be the only fishing spot left on earth)

But both methods pretty much work the same way.
