It is funny how selective quotes from someones post can be used to make a point. I did read VB's thread and the remainder of the Barra were unseromoniously transfered from the aquariums into the nursery tank on November 16th after a HSM with the readings and the transfer to the 1000L tank did not take place till mid January.
Yep... that's what I said....

And continued to suffer losses... before moving the bigger fish – unknown number… into the two 180L tubs that were filtered by a 25L home brew tub… that you mention…
Before moving them again, about a month later into a 1000L tank with growbeds attached…

It is not surprising that new comers like myself can become confused when there is so much conflicting information around.
Well that depends where you look... and who you listen to....
I have highlighted the consistant ratios suggested... and expoused by the senior members of the forum...

But I find that the best way to learn is to just do it and if you make mistakes along the way then hopefully you learn from them. The freindly advise and encouragement that is recieved in general on this forum is what keeps people interested and comming back for more but scathing critisism does little good.
What "scathing critisism"... I'm just trying to help...

On the subject of the corect ammount of filtration to use :
Quote:
No a 1:1 ratio of filtration volume to water volume is not excessive... it's the absolute minimum
In fact... it was always suggested, repeatedly... that ALL systems should be designed with a 2:1 ratio.... in order to meet the necessary fitration requirement of fish bio-mass at point of harvest...
REPEATEDLY... suggested...
Lately... it has be REPEATEDLY IGNORED.... and a 1:1 ratio has become the norm... as have FISH DEATHS!!!
To the point that I've bit my tongue many times and not posted... because frankly (no offence personally)... I'm getting the shits with people killing their fish...
And then :

Here's a 6-700L tank with 4 half barrel growbeds... going just fine...
Correct me if I am wrong but this would be closer to a 1:2 ratio of Filtration Volume to Water Volume and going just fine.

Yep... but what wasn't mentioned was the stocking level.... the system was running on about 100 yabbies, 3 x 100mm Silver Perch and 6 200mm goldies... now it's running on about 3 x 20mm trout and < 50 yabbies...
And the fact that it also incorporates another series of "dutch pots" for filtration... a 200L duckweed tank attached to the yabbie tank... for ammonia absobtion etc...
It also has a nursery/quarantine tank attached ... which houses all fingerling stock when first arrived...
It was posted as an example of how easily a couple of blue barrels can be used to provide filtration... and acheive successful results..
I'm not trying to put you down... or argue with you...
Your systems is...
a)... uncycled...
b) not processing your ammonia load...
c) overstocked/underfiltered
Whether you want to take my advice or not is up to you...
