You'd need to get around 100 in a box to make it feasable at all :( 100 fish x 100mm = bad :roll:

Dangnamit.

:| How about a road trip, after you go drilling in Karratha ??? I think I had 100 a box @ 20 mm , then the last batch they sent me they crammed them all in , and a big loss had occured on arrival :roll: .

With airators, and stuff, it could be a good pick up ???

Yeah, I wouldn't go much above 20-30mm for 100/box...

@100mm ... more like 20/box... less depending on distance... and with that distance to Perth... probably about 5...

Broome Tafe doesn't like sending off larger fish. Smaller fish travel far better, and recover quickly .

With the price of fuel, running a landcruiser with 2 big toolboxes, a trailer with a 1000 litre pod, and the cost of two bottles of oxygen, still sucks :(

Theyd still be $3 or 4 a fish easily.

Its about 2000k to onslow, and 2400 to broome. I am afraid the even I probably wont go that far for fish.

Can anyone in Perth organise a group buy in from Broome Tafe? Barra become exceptionally cheap in lots of 1000+ - like around 0.65 each for 50mm fish.

Get a couple of thousand and it becomes very viable. I want at least 500 at this stage.

Make me laugh , make me weak.... we would need anouther tank, and a holding period so they all come good. It can be done... but it's up to OBO, then we have to organise....it is possible, easier to drive to Broome I recon....

If OBO was good for the trip to Perth, from Karratha, with the Barra, that would save 360 km of fish travel, with the Barra not comming into Onslow. Maybe it could be organized the fish get frieghted to Karratha. Fingerlings are so delicate. Personally I like the Plane.

There is another way.....

Narrogin to Broome 1000 nm @ 100 kts = 10 hrs flying plus 1 hr fuel stop (ouch)
Fuel 20 hrs @ 15 L/hr = 300 L @ $1.95 = $585
25 hr service, oil and filter = $28
TOTAL = $613

MTOW = 500 kg
plane.... 275 kg
pilot....... 85 kg
fuel........ 56 kg
jocks & socks....5 kg
TOTAL... 417 kg

Payload 500 - 417 = 83 kg

Say 2 x 50 L foam eskies with 25, 50 mm Barra fingerlings each esky, 50 x $5 ea = $250
Plus transport cost of... $613
TOTAL $863

Allow 10% loss = 45 fingerlings costing 863 = $19.18 each
Potential loss 98% = 1 fingerling costing $863 each !!

Golden Ponds sounds quite reasonable compared to the above. :roll: :roll:

Wrong.....I am 1600 km from Perth, about 340 km to Karratha....the drive out to the highway is 82 Km alone, then Roubourne is maybe anouther 60 Km from Karratha, I am thinking Broome could be about 1000kM from Onslow so about 2600Km from Perth....a mega big drive :blackeye: Just for a few fish :shock:

Yeah go Rick Great idea :flower:

After seeing the price listing for Broome Tafe and working out the transport costs I dont feel so bad for handing over the $3 each for the 50 odd fish I bought from Golden ponds. The fish varied in size from the smallest around 40 to the largest 125mm and on average they would have been 60mm+ On top of this they were only 10 minutes down the road from me.

This is my first season in AP so I didnt realise there was such a shortage of fish for this time of year. Is this the norm or is it an increase in demand ?

To the best of my knowledge Jessy Golden Ponds bought most of these Barra fingerlings from Freo Tafe who had previously bought the fertilised Barra eggs from Broome to grow out to fingerlings.

And the circle is complete :D

Now I know why some prefer silver perch since they take more than a year to grow out... less headache for fish shortage....
