Hmm, I guess the sensible thing to do would be to go with perch/trout. Keep temp records, and try barra later if it looked ok. But I would then be stuck with perch for a couple of years at least. I spose it would be to much to ask to be able to have perch and barra in the same tank.

The water temp got up to 21 yesterday. I put a makeshift cover on the tank, just some shets of tinted polycarbonate, and very loosely wraped some leftover pond liner around the tank. At 7am this morning air temp was 15, tank temp 20. Amazing how much difference some not very sophistcated insulation has made.

Still undecided on the fish, but think I need to decide today. I think the delimma is that I thinkI should get the perch, but really want to get the barra.

GET THEM BARRA THEN  I did them first fish out, they were a success, just don't swing their temps and be prepared to fork out for some heating if we have a cold spell. WBA hatcheries at west beach also have them, they are generally 1.2 cents per mm. buy the biggest fish you can to give yourself the best chance of eating them in the one season.

WBA currently only has stock of about 30mm fingerlings... and plan to release their next batch to market on 10/11/09... when they are expected to be close to 40mm...

At that size... they will require grading within a couple of weeks (50mm)... and a further grading around 80mm...

If you really want the Barra... go the 200mm ones at #1aquaponics... at $3 each... and be prepared to heat for a few weeks... and later in the year...

BTW what fish to you have himzol? I'm just down the hill from Blackwood hopital

Sorry for not replying earlier, I was in Darwin for the week with no computer. I've got trout at the moment in the system, with goldfish in the sumps. I have some silver perch in an aquarium which will go out into the system when the trout come out...looking at the weather, it may be real soon...

As for the Barra.. don't forget that the 5 months of "hot "weather we are about to have is really more like 4 months in the hills, may be less. It's the night time temps that you have to worry about, wether it's aquaponics or your dirt garden. I for one would like to see how you go though..

Himzo.
