Hey guys,

The bubbles are not really scummy, I can break them up with the squidgy cleaning tool pretty cleanly. Water flow is from about 2 inches above the tank. Pretty good flow, seems like good oxygenation. 11 happy goldfish, no heater, feeding twice a day. Any clues? If organic content of the water is rising should I add another plant pot tothe system?
Bubble strip starts at about 10mm wide and flares out to a point at each end of the tank.
Thanks

Monya

Yep that's purely organic protein. A little is ok. You likely have more O2 than wamer systems as well due to the colder temperature holding more.

Another plant or a heavier feeding plant or a partial water change will all reduce this. Fast your fish for a day. Meant to be good for them.

It looks at a healthy level to me. Anyone else?

You were right AA. Since I put the fern above my aquarium it has basically sat there doing nothing- not dying, but not growing. In the last 2 or 3 days, I have noticed nearly 10 new fronds starting. It's very exciting. I am going out to the shed now to grab an old heater I have, to warm the water up a bit- see if I can't get it humming along. :D

dunno. I have had the big white one for about 2 years. He was tiny when I got him, and he's a real beauty now. The other I bought about 5 weeks ago I spose. They have grown heaps too- spose it's gonna happen, we feed them at least twice a day and they eat it all

the reason I asked was because the last time I saw bubbles like that in a goldfish tank was when they were going to breed... but the newer fish might still be too young for that. :)

Making a bubble raft..... I've heard of that, do golfish do it? I've never managed to breed goldfish, only fish I have ever bred is black mollies, at least I had pregnant mollies a couple of months back, haven't checked the pond I put the pregnant ones in, to look for babies..

Goldfish don't make bubble nests to breed
They deposit their eggs on vegitation.

Monya, you'll notice the male sort of knocking into the female when they're about to spawn, and yes have some plants in the tank, i think some people use plasic strips tied to a wire (sort of like a bottle brush, but not stiff) and then remove it when they have spawned. Apparently goldie eggs are seen as food by the parants straight away.......hungry bastards that they are :)

Glad you made it here AF (Ausyfish) :)

Do you want a sexy spawning video? Can I upload it or where should i store it to link y'all up.... Smallish file only 30 secs or something.

Very happy to hear things are improving Monya.

I have grown out goldfish to 250 mm in 2 years in Aqua. Store folk thought I was a liar till they checked something on the fish scales. (rings like on trees apparently). That was without even trying.
