Where is a good place to get Bream fry / fingerlings in Perth? Also interested in the Tandanus catfish but not keen on shelling Out $25 at City Farmers

Only place i know of with bream are Challenger TAFE in Freo.

Tandanus are supposed to be illegal over here if they're more than 8cm (don't ask - it makes no sense to me either), so pet stores are about the only place you'll find 'em. I did notice the aquarium pet store on Gt Eastern Hwy in Midland was selling smaller ones for $15.

That's why I said "don't ask" !!

As we have discussed before EB - would suggest that Fisheries wouldn't even be able to provide a firm answer. There's certainly any number of pet shops selling above and below 8cm which means somebody (or everybody) is bringing them in.

Don't worry FB - you'll probably be able to access the forum from jail for an hour or so a day

It's alright, the act only has restrictions on their movement around the state, not owning them.

Ahh, they must be buying them from Challenger TAFE, along with their barra.

Yeah, it does a bit. But it may just be a case of GP are the only ones contracting them to produce a hatchery run of stuff we can buy/use. They still have beautiful big broodstock of mulloway, kingies, and snapper that I would assume are not just sitting there for no reason.

The bream I know are really only the result of student breeding programs as part of their study.

Their doing a larval run in January, though I don't know what of yet. I'll be working there for five days as they change over from rotifers to artemia. Will try and get some piccies.

Thanks for that. Must make a note...... Pay the big dollars. Make sure the fish is NOT big or face a possible BIG fine for a native fish. Might be easier to go down the road to the pet shop, buy some overseas species which are an invasive local waterways risk for half the price? Our fisheries lawmakers should be encouraging farming of local species to build stocks not the opposite. Common sense must be discouraged at all costs it seems when framing laws.

Yeah but it only goes one way. When the TAFE wanted Trout they got them from me as GP charges a lot more for them. You would have thought they would sell them to the TAFE at a reasonable price given all the fish they get from there.
There are some farms licenced to do WA natives so I cant see how the native Tandanus Bostoki could be illegal to keep at any size. I know that some have had success breeding them so maybe they will become more readily available in the future.

Hi Gav, we're talking about Tandanus tandanus, not cobbler. Do you know anyone breeding T. bostocki ? Are they allowed to do live sales ?

Yeah Gnash, I know they're out there. I do have a trip planned with Nocky (anyone remember Nocky ???) sometime, but it's a lot more reliable, survival-wise, if you can buy fingerlings.

There was a guy in the Perth hills breeding them many years ago. Not sure if he's still doing them. He had all the licences so I presume he could sell them. He was also doing the Pygmy Perch and local Minnows.
There isnt a lot of difference between the local Tandanus and the eastern states variety other than the WA one dosent grow quite as big.
