Pretty sure theyre not frog eggs, i havent seen nor heard any. Would be pleasantly surprised if any frogs made it my tank as its in the shed.

The koi are about 10 - 20 cm long. I've seperated a few of the eggs into a makeshift trap to see if anything eventuates.

Looks like the barra will be very lucky indeed if they reach 'manhood' before my belly

Funny you should say that because their male until 4-6 yrs when they then go female! Sad thought eh! but I know a sad sack of s--t that could have been a barra.BIL .
Not sure when they produce viable milt.

I found another s/p supplier in Gidgegannup last week a little closer to Perth his prices were about the same as arcadia.he has available right now some larger fish from about 250 grams for about $19.00 kg or fingerlings in about 4 or 5 weeks for $1.20 ea his number can be obtained from me if you wish he usually only handles large orders but will help us out with small orders

Hi all ..

I have been breading Koi in my Dam for about 7 or 8 years now with hardly any intervention from me, apart from feeding. I started with about 6 little fingerlings about 50mm long. I pumped the bore for about 30mins a day and they just went for it.

This has been fun but I have since sold all my fish (100 or so) and now want to try something different.

Someone mentioned silver perch to me and it sounded very interesting as I can eat them :-)

What I really need though are some fingerlings. ... Someone else mentioned there was someone in Parkerville growing them. It would be a great help someone could provide the contact details of this person ?

Would this the best fish to grow in a dam environment in Perth W.A. for eating ?

Do they breed up themselves without much help ?

Someone said the Koi would need a hand .. but I found you couldn't slow the little buggers down from having an active sex life !

Unfortunatly they silver perch have quite complex spawning triggers for them to be able to breed in tanks with out hormones,
BUT

If you have a dam, and have water running into that dam after a rain, they you may very well be able to breed them!

The is a very indepth document on their spawning cues in the download section.

actually the trigger is 24C from memory, basically the triggers are rise in temp, rise in water level, and the water has to flow over "dry earth" earth from the summer. Don't laugh, but the dry earth stores certain volatiles that are released when the first rains come. You know the "smell of rain" during summer?

have a read, very interesting. or u can just shoot a mumma up with some hormones

Yes .. I have had a skim .. very interesting reading thanks again !

I have never injected a fish with anything .. what sort of job is it ? .. do you need to have a phlebotomist's training ?

Hormones ? ... I got plenty .. but are they the right ones ? :-)

iwas taking the piss fireant ;)

some how i don't think that the backyard / sustainability / back to basics manual has a chapter on hormone injection ;)

which is why i'm trialing the tandanus tandanus cat fish. 5 to 30C temp tolerance, and they breed. They are also listen in that document. Oh, and they're natives
