So does anyone know why the size is effected, is it to do with biological reactions to the proximity of others? Is it related to oxygen levels, presence of waste in water, lack of exercise?

Think you will find it is a bit of everything.

Some fish are school fish and do better in crowded situations others suffer.

Levels of oxygen will affect the fish health and size.

Exercise will probably also affect then but in which direction I don't know, maybe lack of exercise might make them fat or maybe more exercise might give them eat better

Waste water will have an affect.

Feeding levels also, too much and the water quality drops, too little and the fish don't grow.

From what I have seen in these forums people tend to get a better growth after the first batch. Basically when the system has matured and is giving the best filtration, removing the most wastes and allowing a higher feed rate.

OK here's a question whats the best 2 lots of 50 trout in 2 1000 litre tanks or 100 trout in 2000 tank the reason i asked my mate has just given me 2 more 1000 litre tanks i could bolt them together and cut a 3 ft sq hole between the 2

How long is a piece of string F7F, I would say 1 tank as they have more room to move around even though the same space is used at 50 or 100, but I wouldn't put 100 in 2000lt's, as mentioned earlier in the thread I have 50 in 3000lt's and have the same meat as 100 in 3000lt's, so depends how big you want your fish

If you have two completely independent tanks then if you have a critical problem in one you only loose half your stock.

Well after having a critical failure myself today I certainly wish I had two separate systems. So far lost 1/2 my fish, possibly more. :(
