There's only six species of deer in Australia... Chital (or Indian Spotted Deer), Fallow Deer, (neither of these, as they're both "spotted").... Rusa (not this one which has hoarse hair), Hog Deer (unlikely as it has "rounded" ears), ....

Or the Samba, or Red Deer,.... Looking at the ginger patch on the rump... I'm picking the Samba.... the Red Deer has a more straw colouration on the rump...

Sambar are the largest of Australia's wild deer and the third largest of all deer species behind moose and wapiti. They are extremely wary and shy and have a well-earned reputation as one of the hardest to hunt of all the world's game animals.

I saw some more fish yesterday. Very very small. Maybe 1cm, black and thats about all I can tell you. There were lots of them though.

My vote's for Sambar too, they're very tasty, but if you're going to shoot them, you need the following.

A) Much patience
B) Much stealth
C) No spotlight (legality)
D) A larger than usually necessary firearm for Victoria. .270+ I believe is the legality
E) At least 2 strong mates close enough at hand and stupid enough to follow you into the bush to cart out the carcass, which will normally have to be butchered on site, cos they're so damned heavy.

It turned out that they are Red deer and the fish I saw recently were in Trentham.

I'm off to castlemaine today and I'm going to throw a bait net in to see if I can catch some of the fish I saw there.

Went fishing yesterday and I had some success but I'm not sure what everything is that I caught.

And finally these:

So what are they and how many many are there?

I know they are not very good (was a bit rushed trying to get shot and get fish back in water but they are probably better for ID purposes than the bucket shot.

I was thinking more like a sleepy cod or relative... big fat short ugly looking things. Just like the pic...

don't know where or under what conditions you were fishing, but it seems incredibly unlikely that it would be a sleepy cod, although it shows some resemblance.

You'd know better than me... just what it looked like. Sleepy's are warm water now I think about it aren't they? makes it VERY unlikely true...

Looks like a flat headed gudgeon to me. They look a bit like a small cod with there wide mouths and fins.
