Sorry Kiara, I don't want to thread jack, but would just like to see if anyone here could recognise what is wrong with my SP.

Set up a quarantine tank with a 200L barrel (or two) or similar, then you can bump the salt to 5-6ppt where it will do some good. Get a bucket heater and thermostat if you need to raise the temp. Isolate fish for a MINIMUM of 10 days. I've had great success eliminating Ich, that white patchy fungus, and treating new fish before adding them.

Watch the Nitrite/ammonia, you will need a biofilter of some sort.

Loser your Silver Perch has Saprolegnia parasitica fungus.

Some of the fish have died without any real visible signs, but I'll post some pics of some recent deaths. (I hope this doesn't freak out young Kiara...)

This one was on the bottom of the tank this morning.
Looks like the flesh has rotted away. Gills looked fine on this one. Definitely no visible fungus.

Bit quiet on here...

Anyone seen SP like this before, and effectively treated it?
I'm hoping that my fish are past the worst of it due to some potassium permanganate treatment.

Look @ lesions and ulcers in a web search and try and deduce from there. Without autopsy, and analysis of tissue samples, hard to be sure.

Be cost prohibitive for a fish that is destined for the table anyway, unless you are a commercial grower.

Helps to have a lab to ID some of these organisms and diseases, external signs often aren't enough. Sometimes you get lucky and can figure it out but don't expect too much.

If fish could be bred in system so new diseases weren't introduced it would help with this. Salting initially would also help since it helps the fish build of a slime layer and it makes it harder for organisms to gain entry.

Yes, me too..... Grrr... So go and get an aquaculture degree, then come back and spend all your free time sitting scanning all the forums looking for peoples posts about fish problems, answering the same questions over and over again for the next X years....

Quarantine tank! The best way to prevent incoming pathogens, or treat sick fish. They can be temporary and portable. I have a 55gal aquarium I use for new fry and fingerlings. But when I get large fish that need treatment I have an IBC, normally a rainwater collection tank, that I can isolate with an aquarium filter or one growbed with a dedicated sump. There I can salt to high levels which is adverse to many parasites and pathogens, and control temperature which is helpful too.

Once I did not quarantine new catfish and a short time later I had a horrible ich outbreak. I made a quarantine tank out of 3 half wine barrels connected with U-siphons. I had some fish in every barrel, a heater and a filter for 15 days to eradicate the ich.

Many parasites cannot survive without a host. Maybe some pathogens too. So by removing ALL the fish from my system, there was no way for the ich to survive. Once it was eliminated from the fish completely, they were returned to the system. No more ich.

I have had a few other symptoms like columnaris (sp?), and they were eliminated by maintaining a low salt level of about 1ppt. I try to maintain 1-1.5 ppt at all times using KCl, NaCl and Epsom salt. I think the ratio is 5-5-3 but I favor the KCl. The potassium and magnesium are beneficial nutrients. I don't like using things that do not benefit the plants or fish.

That reminds me, we just had a heavy rain so I need to check the salt and get it back to where it belongs. I hope your fish get better, but unless you can isolate them and treat them aggressively you may keep losing them one by one.
