Is that because crocs are in the north and trout are in the south, so you never see them? I rarely ate trout before I started growing my own, but IMO they taste much better than fish farmed Atlantic Salmon, or any other fish from the supermarket for that matter.

In Melbourne you'll have no trouble at all growing trout to large plate size.

can easily get yearlings to over 1kg in 1 growing season here.

i noted this morning, have some white spot on one fish's head, what is this disense? how to treat it?

It might be Ich, and if so, you'd want to salt to 3ppt.

think so, do you mean 3 percent of the water volume? do i need to change water after treatment?

3% is 3 parts per hundred, you'd need 3 parts per thousand if it is Ich, ie 3kg salt in 1000litres of water.

Many plants such as brassicas and celery grow well in that, but strawberries will probably die off. In cold water temps you might need 6-10 weeks at that salinity, then you could bring it back to 1-2ppt by removing some water and replacing with fresh water.

My one is 1000 litre, so i am putting 3kg salt, is this ok to the fish?

It's certainly fine for Rainbow Trout and Murray Cod, and I think also for SP and cattish.

forgot to explain, as i am moving home, so i have set up a ibc tank to hold the fish only for a certain period.

I've just moved house, 1 fish tank 2500L and the other 1200L, 4 grow beds and some 2000-3000L of media....WHAT A FREAKIN PAIN WITH FISH IN THE SYSTEM!!

Actually it wasn't so bad moving it all > it was at the other end where I did not have time to immediately put grow beds to system in the new house so fish went hungry for a while.

All the trout survived though so I must've done something right!

As for the fish you're looking at > if you've tried MC/SP etc then why not give the trout a go? They will certainly grow very large, very quickly and there's no real need to keep them over summer. I think in Canberra there's approx 2 months where it's too hot and I have no fish in my system but obviously there's a buffer of nutrients with the solid waste etc still being there so I did not notice any issues with plants so much.

We ate some of the trout we harvested in Dec over Jan/Feb and then add more trout/rinse/repeat.

Another option others have used and I'm about to try is a large roll of black PVC pipe that sits on the ground in the sun and is used to heat your water when it's super cold for the SP or other species wanting warmer water.....could be an option if you have room and you really don't want the trout

it is good to hear that as i find someone with similiar situation, moving home is not fun for a setup aquaponics, everything will start again, but the good thing is that i will enjoy to build another new one, it will be better as i have some experience now. But first task is to move the fish safely, so far i lost three, but others are good.
