wow so tiny... I'm extra happy now that an AP nut was the delivery man for my fish. good luck mate, out of 100 4 isn't that bad. If it gets over 10, I wouldn't buy from that bloke again (unless your conditions are to blame)

That's pretty slack on the part of the transport company.... I'd ring the manager and register a complaint... make him aware that the package contained live fish....

Then I'd ring the hatchery so that they either know not to use them again or they put a rocket up their kybers.

I suspect that the mortality rate will be higher, at that size I'd be very surprised if they are weened onto pellets. (hopeing they are)

I've left mine with KE for the time being as I will probably set up an aquarium to grow them out until I can safely put them into the AP setup.

So the question is, do I go all out and set up a show aquarium or a bare bones setup?

H.

KE14,interesting that they were under size, so were my little cod and it seems to be something I've noticed with quite a few fingerling purchases. Good save by your mate they wouldn't take long to kark it in that heat. I don't trust transport companies with anything of importance, too many things bent broken or otherwise so I picked my fish up from the supplier, 2 hour drive over and back but at least I know they weren't thrown about or left in the sun. However I do realize it's not always possible to pick them up yourself but it is my preferred option.
Can't wait to see how they go, yellow belly were my other choice but the weaning side of things put me off.
Good luck with it all

CF - where did you get your cod from? How small were they? What size were they meant to be?

Himzol and KE - unfortunatelly this sounds like the experience I had with my Barra (in terms of the size that is). The barra I got were only 25mm, tiny. Not only that, the fish farm had only had them a couple of days when they sold them to me. What this means is I copped a lot of mortalities that normally would be expected to happen before they are sold to the customer (size mortalities as well as movement shock from the move to the fish farm). I was made aware that the fish were small (though not quite that small) - but I think there is a bit more involved here than the old 'buyer beware'. This fish farms often say that they will not sell fish under 50mm (for important reason) yet turn around and do so. Doesn't go well fro repeat purchases or general reputation.

commercial purchases can be claimed back if fish are DOA or die soon after. That the Fish Farm passed them on to you so soon, is negligent. You chould have been able to inform the fish farm of your losses, and have them claimed against the wholesaler for you. It is completely unacceptable.

Barra at 25mm are so cute, I used to get them that big for my aquarium :-)

I've been eyeing the kids toy box off for a long time, finally got to put it to good use. Otherwise they would have gone straight to the bottom where I couldn't see them but the tantans could.

Not so cute dead though. I treated the barra in the best way possible. Qucik transport - acclimatisation - into precycled aquarium etc etc - but lost about 50 in the first week. Losses since then have been purely to cannabalism, except one that got crushed and another that died for unexplained reasons.

Tis bullshit for these places to be so negligent and take advantage of small purchasers and I'd name them but for risk of legal action. Not only did all this happen - but they also undercounted my fish by about 30%

How many did you purchase? Including the 30% you didn't get?

Yeah I havent actually counded mine yet, I'll wait until Himzol comes back to pick his up.
If someone was going to take advantage of me I'd much rather they charged me inflated prices but were honest about it, then at least I'd know what I was getting. How do they count the fish anyway? What if I had ordered 3000 and they undercounted by 30%, how would I know?

When I purchased mine, the guy at least feined counting them as he dropped them from the net into the bag (this in itslef probably stressed them beyond belief). The mistake I made was to try and be polite and not crowd him while this was going on. What I should have done was get in close and watch him like a hawke. This was the same guy who, when I asked what ph the fish were at so I could make sure that my conditions were not too much different, told me that he couldn't give a shit about pH and that he never needed to worry about such things for his fish keeping because he could monitor conditions without testing. What he failed to realise was that I was not so much interested in ongoing pH level or whether the pH that the fish were at was suitable, but whether it was substantially different to mine (for aclimatisation purposes).

KP - I was meant to be getting 220. 100 were for me and 100 for Les, I sought 20 extra to help cover mortalities. They were charging the ridiculous price of $1 each for these 25mm fish. The only reason I didn't go back and throtle them was that I had a 200 fish credit with them from a previous poor service issue and therefore only paid for the 20 extra. By the way, as an asside, I was provided with no receipt, which is a definite no no - given that I shoudl have one to prove that my fish came from a licensed fish farm. Again I was too polite to ask WTF that was all about at the time. Now that I have calmed down a bit over the whole thing - I'll be having a friendly chat to the manager of the establishment sometime soon to point out a few home truths to him ;-).

KE, you will also find that any stray bits of algae and food will accumulate in the fabric mesh. It helps you clean up the water ;)
