I sure hope so. The last thing I want to do is cover my pond. If you look at fish in a lake they won't jump out. It must have to do with size of the water. I've built in ledges all around, so I hope they stay put.

You'd change fish species!

My tilapia jump, my goldies don't. If you use netting, make it small mesh so they don't gill themselves. I know commercial trout RAS use high sideboards to keep their trout from jumping. That last tidbit was from Ryan's workshop. In my new RAS , I had tilapia jump on a newly stocked tank and lost 8-10 in one night. They're all covered now, and the only ones that aren't have goldies in it. I know koi can and do jump as well. When they are spawning and the males chasing the females they can get pretty frisky.

When I was cycling my system I had a 1.5kg European Carp leap out of the FT through the 200mm reo mesh trellis on the pergola and over the gravel path into the garden.

At the fish hatchery in Mora north of us by 15 mi (24 km) their 30 ft (9 m) raceways had water only up halfway on a maybe meter high sidewalls. I suppose they are more concerned with keeping them in than having a larger volume of water. I hadn't thought about that until now. FYI, those trout are endangered Gila trout. The 3 year old breeders were 45 cm long! Beautiful fish, but big jumpers apparently.

I've lost about 20 Trout fingerlings in the last few months. I've never seen one jump out, but it's always at night, and always right next to the return pipes. There is only a small gap for them to escape, but somehow they find it and get out. I overstocked the tank though (the hatchery gave me 83 instead of 25), so I really haven't worried too terribly much about it. But I definitely still need to build a legitimate cover one of these days.

I had a few trout leap out after I introduced them to my silver Perch. Only noticed when my dog brought in some fish guts :-(
