What are your tanks made of FF??
I have been thinking of putting a few fibreglass tanks into the ground but am unsure if movement in the soil would crack them?? I guess they do it with swimming pools so it should be ok. I was talking to a Barra farmer recently and he raised his tanks in his shed as he recons there was a 6c temp difference between the top of the shed and the bottom!!

They are ibc/s with cool room material all round see the start of my thread

Was there any resolution about whether or not it's ok to have different species sharing the same bio-filter?

I dont seem to have any problems keeping catfish, SP, and rainbow trout together. The main point my friend made originally was that the fish growth and health overall will be much better if you just keep one species. There's alot of people here happy to try and prove him wrong.

I would think that the millions of aquaria keepers around the world would also prove him wrong too, wouldn't they? There would have to be heaps of fish tanks with more than one species in them, with their bio-filters happily coping with more than one species.

Neil spoke more in reference to a commercial system which would generally have a higher stocking rate than a backyard system. His point was that the main reason for commercial systems failing was combining different species using the one biofilter. i.e. if a commercial system could hold 1000 fish of species A, it would not manage with 500 of species A mixed with 500 of species B, it would be OK with 100 of each but that wouldn't be commercially viable. He also said that the 1000 single species system would have faster fish growth than a 500+500 mixed species system. A Backyard AP system can have a much higher stocking density than an aquarium as the biofilter can be much bigger.

I have been thinking of doing Tilapia in summer and trout in Winter, but never together. I wonder if it would still be a problem if I harvested out all of the one species before introducing the new? Maybe even a week or so empty in between.

Trout kill silver perch.

There is not any marks on the perch, but they are dying, probably being scared to death lol.

They have bits of pvc in the tank to hide in.

The Perch are only dying in the tank with the trout.

OBO, I am sorry to hear of your SP fatalities. Have you lost many?

Can you relocate the remaining SP to anotther tank?

I am glad that I didn't get the SP when I was going to.
I suppose that I could've kept 100 SP in my 1KL sump while the Rainbow Trout occupied the 5KL FT.

Still could, I suppose.

Not all the trout out there are being the agressive one's. I was at the BYAP shop the other day and Joel put a few trout in with his Murray Cod. Within a couple of minutes a couple of trout just dissapeared!!!
