Looks like you have made your decision no matter what people say Tom. Good luck and I would be interested in your results for this experiment.

You never know you may even reach Murrays dream number for a IBC .

Hi Bear,

Not at all, in fact I have decreased the number of fish I intend to increase by.. I was going to go from my 50 to 75 but now I think I will go to 65... I believe you are correct and 50 seems like a reasonable number but it seems interesting to push the envelope a bit ... bad habit I know

I think the points made about oxygen and nitrates are good valid ones and I certainly wasn't disagreeing with them, just pointing out what I have done to marginalise them as problems in my particular case.

If I had more space I would definitely just expand as it is a much better option.. the same could be said for my towers and perhaps even flooded pipes as if I had more floor space I would have just added DWC or more media beds or both :thumbleft:

So I appreciate the input and it has affected my decision.. thanks all!

so how much do you think I would need?
Currently I have 3 IBC growbeds 300mm deep with expanded clay and 50 litres of K1 media with 30L/m of air (for the biofilter) and another 30l/m for the FT

Its hard to tell what your point is Joblow, I count about 30 Jades but what size FT is it.

Tom I would try another 25 litres, you could just run the system keeping an eye on things and if ok fine. But when trouble does hit it may be too late.

I might take your advice and do that. I think what might help also is that I have the RFF that I drain to a mineralization tank (which I reintroduce into the system later on) I guess if it was to overload the biolfilter I could temporarily use the nutrients in the mineralization tank on the wicking bed instead (but that means noticing that the ammonia is rising which may be too late). So another 25L of K1 media is not difficult or expensive as I have it already setup and ready to be added to.

Thanks

Hi Jo,

Yeah that looks cool.. like Charlie said though it would be interesting to know how many and how many litres in that fish tank... It looks really full but perhaps the fish are just crowding the window and there may be a lot of space behind them?

Jaymie stocks about 250 - 300 Jades in her FT from memory, mind you she has a 10KL FT.

I would be scared to have that many fish in one place... I would be paranoid some disease would wipe them out :support: but I am a bit paranoid... :D (not to mention unexperienced at fish keeping)
Must also be a pain in the butt to try and catch them... I find it hard enough in an IBC... they are fast suckers

Its a great system, it may take about 3 weeks to get through it but its well worth it.

The tank didn't appear too be much bigger than what you see, there wasn't a lot of depth in behind.
