Interesting.

You would think that a species that is allowed in your state would be granted translocation permission/approval if none were available locally..... or even because of the fact that they are not on the noxious list.

Its a strange set up that fisheries dept.

That's probably because they are legally responsible for plants sent to WA as well as the buyer. The new legislation that is about to come in the Biosecurity and Agriculture Management Act is set to make things a lot tougher. Non-fish biosecurity works on a border principle but fish works on a post border approach. Go figure.

Fisheries now have several biosecurity officers, I know as two of them rocked up here unannounced about a week ago. Thats now 2 site visits I have had in less than 12 months yet I still havent had any written notification about my Jade Perch application which has almost been 12 months since I submitted it. I think a few less site visits and more office work is needed with that dept.

It really sh!ts me gav that the aquarium trade has full run in this area. Whats Aquaponics? Isn't it just an oversized aquarium?

Ive sent emails to the fisheries about this before yet never one reply. No doubt because they just cant answer the question.

Im all for controlling fish species within our fine country but surely common sense prevails? The Jade perch approval is a sham and Ill never understand if it doesnt go through.

Im regularly confused with the rules and regulations as are most people Id imagine. Fisheries need someone in there that can make some clean cut decisions and stop mucking about.

Back to the drawing board then.

Yeah, I'm sorry, but that bit is screamingly (or excruciatingly) funny...

Sorry about the old mobile phone auto correct. Glad I could brighten your day!

By the way, the first word written inside brackets starts with a capital letter. The "or" is also redundant.

I would think the difference is the intention to eat.

So just keep an ornamental Silver Perch in your aquarium and dont intend to eat it :)

But when someone keeps fish in an aquarium and gets sick of the fish just get rid if it by flushing it down a toilet or releasing it into the local waters.

Someone raising fish to eat in AP is not going to do that.

There are arguments for both sides of that theory.
AP fish are only $2ea generally, ornamental are often 10x that price.
You could argue that there is more chance of someone releasing a $2 fish than a $20 one.

Having worked a couple of decades in State Public service and dealt regularly with those who thought it a career (I was IT Support) it may be you are doing it wrong.

I'd go to the local office and ask to see the Fisheries guy/gal. INtroduce yourself, talk to them about what their issues are, about what you are doing and how detached your system is from State waters and you awareness of the issues with noxious species and I think you could get the approvals needed without too many hassles.

These are PEOPLE and they have as many human interactions as the rest of us - you have to give them reasons NOT to apply the rules against you. And most Public Servants aren't actually very good face-to-face; happily denying an application via paperwork is a very different thing to telling a face you will not let them live their dream, PARTICULARLY when that face has just told you they understand you issues, restrictions and problems.

Hmm, I had no idea that SP were not supposed to be imported.

I have been having a bad run with several lots bought from GP of late.

Out of 50 bought in batches since before Xmas none have survived.

These have all gone into a new system and they have told me that I have bad bacteria in my system (wonder where it came from?) most fish have taken ill with in a few days of going in.

They also told me to dose them with Formalin, (spelling?) I said that it was an AP system and I could not use that sort of stuff, they then proceeded to tell me how much they use it. Not sure if I like the idea of eating fish that have been in that stuff!

They also told me that they get the fish from South Australia!

I have had the fish in a tank with up to 10ppt salt coming down to 6ppt as per some of the posts here suggest but to no avail they still all died.

I have also got 2ppt in the tank they went into..but do not want to over salt it as it is so new. So now I will have to find a local breeder for SP.
