Sounds good charlie. I might even chuck a few yabbies in the bottom to help with the cycling for now, or atleast when I have built the system.

Yeh there's plenty of IBC's around here. You just got to be careful as a lot of them have contained glysophate or some other herbicide. You could probably wash them pretty clean, but I personally don't like the idea of using them.

I think I'm just going to stick with black bream for now just because it's easier to source and I won't have to stress about temps as much.

I don't know what others experiences are with Black Bream, but I can say from my own experience that I wouldn't try them again.
They are very slow growing, finicky eaters, extremely flighty, so constantly smashin their noggins against the tank walls at warp speed... and consequently susceptible to stress.

I bought mine at about 70-80mm, had them nearly a year from memory, half died over that time, just one every now and then, even though the water was fine. The rest only put on about 1-2cm... I ended up giving them back to the place I got them from.

Yep... never heard of anyone that had any great success with Black Bream in aquaponics...

Just looked back at a comment I made in 2008 about the black bream in the workshop thread. We had 30-40 in the Backyard system, we lost some in one of the early storms when we were without power, the generator didn't stretch that far. They were eventually moved to the DIY system and the remaining two live in the balcony system. They are beautiful looking fish, but boy do they sulk in the winter. Ever so slow growing and certainly not a fish that I would recommend for use in an aquaponic system or areas with really cold winters.

Yea Ive heard the issue is bringing them in from the wild. I know of someone who has tried this but they only lasted 4 weeks.

I liked mine, but they are at least a 3 year grow-out, probably more on average, and they are prima donna's when it comes to dissolved oxygen.

I lost all mine when the power had only been out for an hour in a 3000L tank that was not heavily stocked. The SP's were swimming around fine, then cats were starting to come to the surface and gulp and the black bream were all stone dead
