i have been informed that they are plentiful in the fitzroy river around rockhampton. I had 6 in a bath for 3 years they grew to about 120mm accross. I talked to a local indigenous person and they told me they very rarely ate them as they were chewy and tasted like sh@t, unquote. Next time im down that way ill have a look for some.

I would say you didn't have this variety then Bluefin, these are eaten by indigenous, mine are around 3 years old and are about 50 - 60mm and have tried one a bit chewy but taste ok, will be better cooked in chilli, these mussels generally prefer still water and live to 20+ years and come mainly from wetlands not rivers, we have freshwater Mussels here in the Blackwood river that sound the same size as yours and taste like crap

Nice Idea Steve, I wonder where in NSW they are... I'm back there again this week... how do security feel about you carrying on live specimens as hand luggage? I'll make sure I pack my bathers.

OK... talked to Neil today.... here's the story...

Mucho, mucho rain over the last four months.... ponds/dams are full to overflowing.... close to 3mtrs deep....

Water allocations have been savaged and licensing costs increased....

Aquablue is going to retain ALL their ponds... full of natures donated deluge... ESPECIALLY the mussel pond, which is being beautifully filtered and cleaned by the mussels....

.... to use to fill their Australian Bass ponds between now and September... in graduated fills to slowly reduce the Bass ponds salinities until near fresh....

They do not expect to harvest ANY mussels before September at the earliest....

Neil apologises to everyone, but that is the direction the company board has decided to take.

I feel bad now. I ordered 50 last year but they could only spare 25. I got them last week with 200 glass shrimp and 100 pacific blue eyes. If anyone in SE QLD wants a few mussels, I have some to spare. I have 25 but only need about 10 so pm me if you're interested and you can have them for cost.

Have been looking steve but none that i can see, it is the species variety more than anything, you need these as they live happily in still water, last email Neil said possibly end of September, but still plenty of rain this way heading your way, but as they spawn in October my thoughts are they will probably wait until after they spawn so ETA November will probably be the go, maybe Scuba Steve is a good option :bigsmurf:
