Hello mates

I heard today that the fisheries hope to have barramundi available around February but minimum order is 400 at a time.

I am after 50 but maybe we can get enough people together.

Let me know.

Cheers

Oliver

UPDATE

If anyone is interested in Barramundi Fingerling please let us know, we are trying to buy a lot from the NT Fisheries and have to reach 400 pieces for a minimum order and unfortunately one of our friends in the Litchfield Small Farmers Group won't get his aquaponics system ready in time.

The price per fish is $2.20 and there is some paperwork to be completed to make the transport and keeping of the fish legal.

We were planning to use white foodgrade 20l pails from bunnings and equip them with an airstone through the lid for transport if advised to do so by the fisheries (especially for longer transports).

http://www.bunnings.com.au/maxi-pail-20 ... pail-with-

Final transport would than either be pick up from our place in Humpty Doo or i could drop off if not too far away.

So far we got :

Joost Farm - 60
Yvonne (Litchfield small farmer) - 100
Doug (Litchfield small farmer) - 50
Simon (Backyardaquaponics) - 30~50? (not confirmed)
Mick (Backyardaquaponics) - 50
Brad H. - 50
Alan S. (Darwin useful food and gardening growers) - 20

Total - 330 (and i take up whatever is missing to reach the minimum of 400)

We are also going to make a group order for Skretting Nova FF (floating pellets) shortly. I have to check on prices but when i ordered last year it was under $5 per kg including delivery to depot in Darwin direct from the factory in Tasmania. Different sizes available 3/5/7/9mm in 20kg bags.

Hi Oliver,

See below prices for the requested feed. All feeds are in 20kg bags, and prices are per kg ex GST and freight.

2.25
Nova FF 5mm 20

Nova FF 7mm 20

Freight really does depend on how much you are purchasing. Minimum freight charge to Toll depot in Darwin is $122.10. You can purchase approx. 5 bags for this price before the freight increases. 10 bags is $184.85. Prices are ex GST.

I have placed an order for 15 Bags, just in case someone wants to buy a couple of kg, that shouldn't be a problem, i have bought some surplus bags to my needs to reach the next level of freight to bring it down per bag.

It is still possible to add barramundi fingerling to the order, the latest news from the fisheries is as follows (from Friday the 19th Feb):

Quote:
Hi Oliver,

Just checking in to let you know we haven’t forgotten about you.

Fingerlings are getting bigger - 60 – 70mm average.

The longer we wait, the better it will be for you guys as I don’t expect them to be size graded by hobby aquaponics farmers.

Over 100mm they are less cannibalistic towards each other and should grow at a similar rate.

Probably another 2 – 4 weeks, when they are over 100mm would be best for you.

Barra will most likely be on 2 – 3mm feed pallet size

Will send you paper work for translocation and payment form for RTM when I get a chance to double check it’s all correct method.

Any worries feel free to email/call

Cheers

Looks like I am a few weeks too late for this, does anyone know of any future planned group purchases?

We can't even be sure whether nt fisheries will sell them again to the public.

Just moved to Darwin, including relocating the aquaponics system, and am after some Barra. This is the most productive thread I've found so far. Does anyone had an extra fifteen or so they are willing to part with or know when/where I can get some?

I've found someone that supplies freshwater Barra in Darwin!!!

I thought we'd never find anyone! We haven't gone to collect any yet, as the tank is still settling, but I've spoken with the own who seems very accommodating. He's been in the business 30 years and has only just started offering freshwater Barra for aquaponics. He has them in different sizes and also has some perch. The down size is they are a bit larger than we wanted and a bit more expensive, but beggars can't be choosers... He does do discounts for bulk buys. I think the price for buying ONE was about $20 for 30cm. I hope this info helps someone else :)

Hurley's always sold barramundi and they were always more expensive than the fisheries because that's where he gets them from. Which is great if you need one or two for an aquarium, but for an aquaponics system it's not viable if you want to produce food for yourself at an acceptable price.

Sorry, I did miss your first post, unfortunately it's not legal to sell any barramundi for a private person, especially if they are undersize... the fisheries don't know whether they do private sales again because of all the additional work required and even to organise a group buy without making any profit was hard, to make sure every one hands in the permit applications in time, getting them picked up on the day in time (they can only survive for a couple of hours in their plastic bags). I still got 80 of the 100 I bought and don't know what fish I am gonna buy when they are all in the freezer in a year or so...

Is Livefish an option for you guys ?? www.livefish.com.au/aquaponics/aquaponics-fish.html
Currently have 20 little barras for $100 delivered.
For W.A there is a quarantine fee, don't know about N.T
A "friend" has dealt with them in the past and always got on alright. Guaranteed delivered alive or a replacement is given .
Cheers

That's doesn't sound that bad. Just had a look on the other stuff in their shop and I might even try don't Jade perch next if permitted. Bit suss looking air pumps in the shop... 150l/m... up to 2m depth... and only 2 watt power consumption. My 80l/m hailea makes the water look like it's boiling at 0.4m and the video of that 150l/m air pump in YouTube looks like not even 10% of the output... off topic I know... ;) still interesting shop. Thanks for the link Matthew
