Golden ponds also do those incredibly blue maron.

Regards yabbie fishing .. the destructor species are considered a pest , and fisheries encourage catching them!

http://www.fish.wa.gov.au/docs/pub/IMPF ... 1.php?0506

They talk about it being illegal on the Western Side of the Albany Highway to farm them in dams. Tank culture may be another matter entirely and would be worth checking up on that one.

They are incredible escape artists .. and will easily climb up an airline shouting "freedom"! One of my blue yabbies did exactly that .. took me 4 hours to find the little bugger!

Living near bunbury. I talk to plenty of farmers through work, so I'll ask around while I'm getting the gear together.

Here are some new additions to my AP system.

Got these Marron the other night, my brother brought them home from his work experience. I think it was his reward for his 'hard' work...

This isn't all of them, I have about 14 all up. The blue ones are pretty rare and fetch a good price on the market. I am going to attempt to breed them. If they don't breed.... they get eaten.

So i take it you have males and females then?
I saw a couple at a pet store once, $30 each...but they were all males =(
They are being very careful with what sex they sell now, as America are now breeding and farming our Australian crustaceans, (marron and redclaw i believe)

Thats the plan......

I'm not sure what sex they are Daniel.... Anyone know how to tell. I have about 4 blue ones so hopefully I have at least one female.

I really hope the black ones breed eventually too.

I think they will be the same as yabbies.. If they have a little "knob" hanging off the knuckle where there back legs join onto the carapace they are male... One on both back legs.

Again when you look underhneath, on that same lask "knuckle" of the legs, but this time the third set of legs from the back has a small circle on it, its a female.... I think my description sux a bit... hang on..

Ahhh, here you go

Never sexed marron, but yabby Males have what looks like a smallraised circle at the base of their last walking legs, and the females have a simmilar thing but on their third (from the tail end) legs
I googled sexing marron but didn't see any pics to make it clearer

From this link ... page 6

http://www.pir.sa.gov.au/byteserve/aqua ... marron.pdf

Quote:
The sex of marron can be determined very easily by examining the underside of the marron.
Female marron have oviducts which are located at the base of the second pair (from the head)
of walking legs and males have male genital papillae located on the base of the fourth pair of
walking legs. Marron reach sexual maturity after one year of age.

The position of female and male reproductive openings used in sex determination. See figure below

The blue ones? How big are they? $9 is still a lot for a small marron, they are really good aquarium dwellers.
