With the high PH and set temperatures between 24/26, the ammonia could be ammonium? Which is not harmful to fish? I have a filter fitted, the SP are due for the IBC this weekend, as their quarantine period will be over by then, the Barra can wait a bit longer for the warmer weather, I wouldn’t like to see how much they will cost to buy by then?

This is my first system, its all working perfect as far as I can see, I see a problem and I am on to it, no dead fish here! Exceptional plant growth, next year the fish will be cheaper as I will be fully setup, I will be seeding my own plants, and the paint bag filter is working excellent! Now the algae has died back, its doing a fine job, collecting anything the radial flow filter misses, took a bit of work and thinking, but alls good,

Still waiting for the full summer sun on my beds, I put 4 goldfish in the sump tank today with the marron, 2 SP in the fish tank, 6 goldfish in the 20ltr indoor tank, 4 Barra and the small SP in the 200ltr indoor tank, which is still high in ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates? Its like the filter not working or something? The Barra will go in the IBC, when it warms up, then I will start looking for some small trout for my winter fish catch, by then I should have the indoor seed trays, but I am thinking months ahead here, and the cats are just loving the new fish in the room?

:D :laughing3:

Yep... just got three Barra today..
A simple and easy start in transition from PeePonics to Aquaponics..
Bought from a fish shop in Bankstown, Sydney, they cost 48 bucks for plate sized fish.
I chose smaller fish, so that i could value add before inviting them to dinner.
I can now look for Silver Perch fingerlings that will grow to maturity..

FT temp is still a bit low at 17c, but I hope that will quickly change.

I read where they are flighty fish, needing discrete feeding so as to not scare them.. These ones come to the FT opening, so that could be a good feature of farm production, and deliberately looking for smaller specimens..

Depending on what sort of filter you're running in the aquarium, they need to cycle too, just like the growbeds do. It takes a whole for the biological filter to develop. Well, that was certainly the case with my son's tropical tank

That cat wasn't happy with you after that.

Sounds like the same angry meow I got when I tried to put my cat on top of the dog.

Yep there weird cats! I never had a cat before! The kid nagged me for two years for a cat be we were still in a rental until I built this place, so I let her have one for Christmas once I had the fence up, since then she conned me into getting the second cat for company? They only go outside when we do! Responsible cat owners! And yes I have photos of when we used to walk him around the block on a lead,
:D :laughing3:

My Barra have just started following me? As I walk past the tank, I only have the four as this is my start-up year, and they are bigger than what I wanted in the first place, but I have put them indoors for now as they wont grow below 22deg, so I have been told,
:dontknow:

When I had Barra indoors in a aquarium they would come up and follow you the length of the tank (6') eat out of your hand, you could even pat them :naughty: They make great pets.
They sulked for a good while when they went outside but they eventually got over it.
And then I BBQ'd them

Only two are for eating, the other two will be used in experiments for breading? it’s a long term goal I have, it wont happen overnight, but it will happen one day! I may need to win lotto first, but I have a dream,

Mine followed me too.
The first on on the second day, the second on the third day... followed me to the table..

the third lasted some more days and rolled over, looking rather yuckie with what I assumed was ICH..

we did cook him, but the flavor was not nice.. Probably from the stress..

I presume that the temperature was what done-them-in.. 13DegC is a little low, I understand..

indeed an expensive lesson.. I now wait to get some SP's... :notworthy:

No for some reason this global warming thing is stuffing up my fish production! I just checked the tank while typing this and its 22deg in the sump tank now! But it looks like rain? Only 16deg this morning, so I am not going to risk good sized fish out there! I am not totally stupid? Just partially! The Barra, well two are 25+cm now they do grow quick when warm? I am having to do water changes every two or three days ATM, I have just started half water changes into the system, then filling up the fish tank with tap water, same PH no bacteria to start off the nitrite cycle,

The good thing about this is I have all the ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate breading in the fish tank, with a half water change I have 100ltr off water going straight into the grow beds feeding the bacteria, plants are loving it, the fish are happy, and I can water my pot plant tomatoes and stuff with better water for them other than from a tap?

Life’s good!
:D

The guy in the shop told me min of 24c or they get sick! The web said 22c? I will try and keep my fish alive till it gets cold again, then two will come inside and two will go to the BBQ, I have long term plans for my fish, and a new idea was given to me today by a new member dangus, a shed around the fish tank! To help keep the fish warm in winter, sheds don’t blow away here to often? Shade houses do! I am in no rush,
:laughing3: :D
