Hi there,

Getting my new system sorted finally (yay). Just wondering, hypothetically, what species of fish/yabbies can you have co-existing in the one tank? I'm getting an 850 litre one. I live in Melbourne, so I was going to just settle on silver perch. Then I thought hey, a bit of variety might be nice, if its possible.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I'd prefer edible species. I've been told its helpful to put goldfish into your system in winter as the other species lose their appetite, which I will do. But just looking to see if generally speaking there are particular species that do or don't play well together.

Cheers!

With my silver perch last year I had trout with them and there were no problems. The trout seemed to even get the silver perch to eat more over winter. I have not done it this year due to slightly overstocking on silver perch. Perhaps next year.

As to yabbies and any type of eatable fish. Based on reading this forum, you are just providing expensive fish food.

Silver perch and Tandanus catfish live happily together and in the winter you can as I do, get a few trout and chuck them in. They all live happily and all I have seen is a couple of the small catfish getting white spot, probably from stess, but that is easily fixed with salt

I have five yabbies/marron in my sump tank, I was going to add the ten goldfish to the sump tank today but the weather changed my mind? As I was going to put the barra in the fish tank today, I just finished setting up a small indoor aquarium for the barra till it warms up a bit more, I will pick up the barra tomorrow after work, and use the aquarium for a few weeks till it warms up,

Brilliant!

Blizzard, you have yabbies with fish and no disasters...? Tell me more!

I'm thinking catfish could be good. I'm
not even sure as to which I'd prefer to eat. My favorite method of cooking fish is in little parcels and I generally just use bream (which I catch!) or salmon.. Hmm

Choosing fish is exciting...

Yabbies and fish typically don't mix well.
Either the fish eat the yabbies, or fish get their fins pinched by them.

I used you have yabbies with fish in aquariums, as small as 120cm /45//45, it depends on your fish, I used to have tropical fish, silver sharks and red fin sharks with the yabbies, just recently I had two gold fish in the sump tank, I rescued one the next day the other took a week to find, I cant see any problems putting the too together in a IBC, but then again my sump has a 700ltr capacity, it was running 500ltr at the time, they don’t compete with food,

I was going to move all the goldfish to the sump tank, but my daughter said she wanted them, now she has changed her mind again, when I say goldfish, they are all different types,

Yes the yabbies will have a go at the fish if they are close together, but in a IBC there is plenty of room, you may even get some extra fish poo in your grow beds, not that I want any in mine, but a little bit over time wont hurt,
