So you'd adjust the times to match the rate of drain? i.e. 15 minutes to fill the GB, then set the time off to match how long it takes to drain out the holes?

I never really thought it through because I've always had a siphon; so the mention of the hole was a bit of 'What the...?'

Journeyman, Dont know if you have read this link but will give a good understanding viewtopic.php?f=51&t=8621&hilit=byap+comparison+test

BTW Stayed at mates place one night over easter, he lives at Epsom.

I dont worry about 15mins on 45 off stuff. My pump fills the GBs and overflows the standpipe until low water level insump cuts out the pump. Then may take 30 mins to drain back thru the FT and refill sump until float switch comes on, IMO dont get too fussed about time on and time off. Just so long as you have a cycle.

With the drilling holes in standpipe (can be one or two) about 20mm up from where standpipe pushes into the fitting at the base of the GB drill a hole (one side or straight thru both sides) size of hole will affect rate draining back to tank.

Have a look at this link also. Scroll down until you see the good looking chick drilling holes.........

Was great to see my fish again. I think they enjoyed seeing me too. Never seen the water so clear. Like filtered water.

Going home now, will put the bell back on. See if the fines go back down into the tank.

Chainsaw, I didn't see anything the minute I put the bell on!!

All clear again this morning after running constant flood overnight. Ran one dump to ground, into all the containers I have to put back in this afternoon after its settled, clear again with bell running.

Solution may be run a settling tank in the system, if you want to keep syphons.

Yeah, not sure, I had clear water for 2 years with the siphon prior to pulling the tomatos and adding the new gravel. Collected a shit load of gunk though by repeating the drianing into conatiners exerise. Might make up a swirl filter to add in line in the event of future cloudyness, otherwise I like to keep as simple as possible. Maybe keep as constant flood??? Maybe the bed is at its limit, with 15 mature fish to one grow bed, but levels all okay still, just need plants to regrow.
