I am looking for fish that are easy to keep and maintain (NY climate) and provides a large biomass per gallon. Tilapia is my first inclination. The only down-side is they need a fair amount of heating. Any other suggestions?

If you are just looking for an effective biomass fish, goldfish are hard to beat. They are a lot less sensitive to water purity and temperature variances than are a lot of other fish. They are also really inexpensive to buy/replace in case of losses.
