I'm just having a think about fish types.

I'm about to put Barramundi in my FT. but wanted to understand other species.

Here in WA (West Aust), i'm only aware of the following.

1. Barra
2. Trout
3. Silver Perch
4. Jade Perch.
5. Marron
6. Yabbies
the next two I don't really know a lot about them being allowed in WA ?
7. Sleepy COD
8. Murray COD

I hate eating fishy tasting fish (Barra is my fav.)
I wonder if anyones done a comparison of our fishy friends to understand & give a consolidated view on their requirements and ease of looking after.

In particular I'm interested in the COD's are they available in the west or illegal?

I have seen both sleepy and murry cod in pet shops so I would believe they may be allowed, I have kept Murry cod my self but only haveing a few they were verry agresive toward each other.

Barra, Trout, Silvers, Yabbies & Marron are all bred here in WA so are easily available. As for the others you would need translocation approval from fisheries to bring fish in from the east. This will cost you $145 per species to apply and you have to fill out a form with 48 questions on it. Even then their is no guarantee that they will approve it.
As Grunta said you can get the other species from the Pet shops but they are supposed to only be kept in aquariums and are usually quite expensive.
Personally, I think the 3 species that we can legally keep are the best for WA conditions and possibly the best for aquaponics systems. Jades would be the exeption though they would be seasonal in Perth as the winters are too cold for them.

Ah yes Black bream.... forgot them.

what do Sleepy COD taste like ?
any ideas where to get them..... so far sounds like COD's may be off the list ?

I certainly won't be importing them from the east, far too much trouble & expense.

I'm going to have to ensure the system's warm enough for the Barra (heater to start with) giving me time to develop a black pipe solar heating solution for the shed roof.
