The fish was definately not ready to spawn, it was only 15 months old and like you say it was October.
Not so sure about your colouring observations either. I have plenty of pics of Rainbow Trout (im also a flyfishing fanatic) with distinct pink lateral lines showing on fish caught in almost every month of the year. The dull steely colour of the bucks also tends to appear a couple of months pre spawning as well as post spawning from what I have seen.

I tend to find that the colder the water, the more colour(especially pinks and reds) rainbows will have.
Here in Vic. in relatively warm water, it is sometimes hard to tell rainbows from browns.
Not that I care much, when I catch em, I eat em!
