We get below freezing temps at night from Oct through May - - semi arid climate with Lots of sunshine - 90-100s(32-38C) for 2-3 months in summer.

I live in a townhouse and would like to grow on the balcony - which means the plants and fish are more exposed

Has anyone tried something like this?

I haven't tried it but I have thought about doing this since I have a large balcony. My main concern would be the weight of the system and the structures ability to support that weight. I considered setting the tank on the ground beneath the balcony to help with this. I do think you will need to give the system some protection. I was thinking of using shade cloth in Summer and putting a small greenhouse on the balcony to help extend the season and/or overwinter the system.

Nice. I've had a 50-gal aquarium indoors and the growbed and sump (stacked) outdoors for a few years. Works well, but we do not have your winter cold. I wonder if you could have something like my indoor system (tank on GB on sump) and divert water to an outdoor growbed for summer?

What direction is your balcony orientated to? Suppose it should be south for best results in your part of the world. If it isn't then shading would be a serious problem.
