We are heading into fall, and I am loving learning about aquaponics as I love pet fish and growing food for the family.

I am planning on building a REAL system this spring, once I have a better job and can throw some real money at the project and can work outdoors.

Right now I am trying to sell my family on plants growing using fish water.

I have the family 55 gallon tank and I have already germinated and started growing a radish and cantaloupe seeds.

Today I was out with my son going to hydroponic and garden stores. I have been out with my daughter earlier, and we went to look at livestock tanks. (LOL, there is a 920 gallon livestock tank for 300.00 US that I have my eyes on).

I had seen a video about rafts http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ppcT4wdVBNk and thought that was cool. I seeing in my folks had some styrofoam around that I could us. They were going to toss a closed cell foam sleeping mat and so I used that to make my raft.

When I was at the gardening store, I asked about some seedlings that they had that looked like they had seen better days, and of course they gave them to me. So that is what you see in my raft. It is a couple of kinds of Kale supposed. Some of the little cups we have slow bolt coriander, spinach and jalapeno peppers.

and another of the fish in the established aquarium. I have a large Plecostomus, a catfish (some odd cool looking species), a pike cichlid, Parrotfish, Jack Dempsey and two Blue Acaru.

I am looking to have a large tank and breed Blue Tilapia. I am looking into what kinds of licensing or permits that I will need to have those.

Looking forward to seeing how these throw away plants grow. I figure worst case senario, I have leaf greens for my plecostomus and son's bearded dragon.
