I was able to negotiate a very good deal on 10 Spangled Perch from the local Aquarium. They are between 8-12 cm and I got them in order to start cycling my system before Silver Perch become available. However, upon further research they have a rep to be a very aggressive fish and not suitable in community tanks. I am wondering whether anyone has experience with Spangled Perch and advice on whether they will co-exist with Silver Perch.

we put 3 spangles in our big tank with about 20 rainbow perch (last Saturday). We now have 1 big (10cm) spangle and about 12 rainbows. Some of them seem to have been chased out of the tank (they were on the ground just downstream from HIS spot). I've since put in a heap of 150mm pvc pipe bits. The spangle has a home (no-one else can come in) and the others have somewhere to hide.
We intend to go out this weekend and get some more from the creek.
On another note, these wild fish learnt about the benefits of eating pellets within 2 days.

you've heard of those benefits then?

The spangle seems to be a grumpy bugger, but when we get some more fish in this arvo, you never know, someone might be bigger than him!

So they can live with others as long as they have some hiding places...I don't believe the fish can jump out of the tank as it is pretty much enclosed. The Silvers are likely to be around the 5cm mark and around 30 of them.

Well they will be able to "gang up" on the spangles then, But when they are big enough, eat the spangles! they're yummy and sweet!
