hi all,
new member here.
so i havent done any AP yet however i have seem to caught the bug anyway.
ive managed to all ready get myself four ibcs off a mate in the know for $50(this was one of main concerns with starting AP as of the cost of getting ibcs or similar)

so i think im going to do a CHIFT PIST system with SLO.

first question is im thinking of making a purpose built room in the corner of my shed. it will be lined and then all plumbing will go thorugh to outside in a green house. the question is will keeping the FT in the shed help in keeping a constant temp in terms of looking after fish??
the sumps ill try and bury outside in the greenhouse.
the other benefit of having the fish in the shed is security. any thoughts?

also is it allright to start silver perch off in late winter as fingerlings?

cheers simon

dont worry ill include photos once i get started (im sure everyones has seen an ibc before)

Also forgot to add that the GB will be bell siphon.
So 1000l FT , 4 300lGB , 2 600lST.

Cheers simon

Like with TCShad's system, I'd be looking to maximise the GBs filtration capability, see : http://www.backyardaquaponics.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=331304#p331304
You could easily increase to 4 x 500L (1/2 IBC) GBs, 1000L FT and 1000L ST. This is also less IBC cutting.

Keeping the FT in a shed wont maintain temperature as well as you might expect, especially if the sump and the GBs (massive heat exchangers) are outside/in GH; burying the sump probably has the most effect? (I've not done the maths for this)

SP are a slow growing fish, so adding them to a cycled system in the dead of winter will simply mean they won't put on a lot mass during the season, so you wont see much change, but they should survive.

i prob should do a little diagram of what i am doing. yeah burying the sump is prob going to happen.i was thinking of doing trout when i get the system good and going(trying SP) or should i just try trout to start, (if i get it ready in winter)? and where would i get in SA?
if i have 4 500l GBs and 1 sump of 1000l what happens if all GBs dump at same time? wont it overflow the sump? thats why i lent towards 4 350l growbeds and two 650l sumps. i was also thinking of when the gbs dump they do it into a blue barrell which the runs in to the sumps.

cheers for the input scott

A 500L GB "full" of hydroton holds about 140-180L of water, other media has different holding capacity so you shoul check the media you intend to use in the design phase.

Are you thinking something along these lines (blocks)?
